Campylobacter helveticus has been isolated from domestic dogs and cats. Although C. helveticus is closely related to the emerging human pathogen C. upsaliensis, no C. helveticus-associated cases of human illness have been reported. This study describes the whole-genome sequence of the C. helveticus type strain ATCC 51209 (=CCUG 30682T).

A variety of strains of the genus Lactobacillus was investigated with respect to the structure, softness, and interactions of their outer surface layers in order to construct structure-property relations of the Gram-positive bacterial cell wall. The role of the conformational properties of the constituents of the outer cell-wall layers and their spatial distribution on the cell wall is emphasiz...

Lactobacillus helveticus can possess one or two cell envelope proteinases (CEPs), called PrtH2 and PrtH. The aim of this work was to explore the diversity of 15 strains of L. helveticus, isolated from various origins, in terms of their proteolytic activities and specificities on pure caseins or on milk casein micelles. CEP activity differed 14-fold when the strains were assayed on a synthetic s...

The proline-specific X-prolyl dipeptidyl aminopeptidase (PepX; EC 3.4.14.11) and the general aminopeptidase N (PepN; EC 3.4.11.2) from Lactobacillus helveticus ATCC 12046 were produced recombinantly in E. coli BL21(DE3) via bioreactor cultivation. The maximum enzymatic activity obtained for PepX was 800 µkat(H-Ala-Pro-pNA) L(-1), which is approx. 195-fold higher than values published previously...

Two genes, pepQ and orfZ, encoding a prolidase and a prolidase-like protein, respectively, were cloned and characterized from Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. The identity of the pepQ and orfZ genes with the Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis prolidase gene (pepQ) was shown to be 98% and 60%, respectively. Both pepQ and orfZ were preceded by a putative promoter region. Northern...

The formulation of this pathway was based on: (a) the finding that cysteine supplies the sulfur-containing moiety of CoA (3,4); (b) the activities of pantetheine and pantothenylcysteine as growth factors for Acetobacter suboxydans (4-6) and Lactobacillus helveticus (7); (c) the presence of enzymes in these two organisms and also in Lactobacillus bulgur&s which decarboxylate pantothenylcysteine ...

Acute psychological stress is positively associated with a cold/flu. The present randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined the effect of three potentially probiotic bacteria on the proportion of healthy days over a 6-week period in academically stressed undergraduate students (n 581) who received Lactobacillus helveticus R0052, Bifidobacterium longum ssp. infantis R0033, Bifid...

The surface chemical composition and physicochemical properties (hydrophobicity and zeta potential) of two lactic acid bacteria, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis bv. diacetilactis and Lactobacillus helveticus, have been investigated using cells harvested in exponential or stationary growth phase. The surface composition determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was converted into a m...

Transcriptional negative regulation of the proteolytic system of Lactobacillus helveticus CM4 in response to amino acids seems to be very important for the control of antihypertensive peptide production; however, it remains poorly understood. A 26-kDa protein with N-terminal cystathionine β-synthase domains (CBS domain protein), which seems to be involved in the regulatory system, was purified ...

Various traditional fermented yak milk and raw milk foods could be considered as an abundant resource for obtaining novel lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with unique properties. Eighty-eight samples of yak milk products were collected from Gansu Province in China. Three hundred and nineteen strains of LAB isolated from these samples were identified by phenotypic methods, 16S rRNA gene sequence analy...
