The reports of a unique mutation in the Janus kinase-2 gene (JAK2) in polycythemia vera by several independent groups in 2005 quickly spurred the development of the Janus kinase inhibitors. In one of the great victories of translational research in recent times, the first smallmolecule Janus kinase inhibitor ruxolitinib entered a phase I trial in 2007. With the approval of ruxolitinib by the US...

Adv. Mater. 2009, 21, 1949–1953 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag G IO N Janus particles are non-centrosymmetric particles with two distinct sides. The two sides may differ in surface wettability or in optical, electrical, or magnetic properties. Depending upon the anisotropic properties, these particles can be used as emulsion stabilizers, analogous to surfactant molecules, optical probes for chemical, bi...

Janus colloids have inspired growing interests due to their diverse potential applications. Herein, we present a facile approach to fabricate Janus submicron sized colloids by the selective etching of anisotropic colloids. Size ratio, microstructure and composition are tunable. The method can be scaled up, which is the key to further exploit practical applications.

Forced coalescence of liquid marbles is reported. Liquid marbles were connected by a glass rod hydrophilized with cold radiofrequency plasma. The process resulted in formation of Janus-marbles. “Sandwich” marbles enclosing solid foamed polystyrene particles and built from immiscible liquids are reported. A broad variety of organic and non-organic powders gives rise to Janus and “sandwich” marbles.

We describe a model that accounts for the complex morphology of spiral density waves raised in Saturn’s rings by the co-orbital satellites, Janus and Epimetheus. Our model may be corroborated by future Cassini observations of these time-variable wave patterns. Subject headings: planets: rings — planets and satellites: individual (Epimetheus, Janus)

A mercapto derivative of diacetylene was used as the hydrophilic ligand to prepare Janus nanoparticles by using hydrophobic hexanethiolate-protected gold (AuC6, diameter 5 nm) nanoparticles as the starting materials. The amphiphilic surface characters of the Janus nanoparticles were verified by contact angle measurements, as compared to those of the bulk-exchange counterparts where the two type...

A library of eight amphiphilic Janus glycodendrimers (GDs) with d-mannose (Man) headgroups, a known routing signal for lectin-mediated transport processes, was constructed via an iterative modular methodology. Sequence-defined variations of the Janus GD modulate the surface density and sequence of Man after self-assembly into multilamellar glycodendrimersomes (GDSs). The spatial mode of Man pre...

Multicomponent nanoparticles are of particular interest due to a unique combination of properties at the nanoscale, which make them suitable for a wide variety of applications. Among them, Janus nanoparticles, presenting two distinct surface regions, can lead to specific interactions with interfaces, biomolecules, membranes etc. We report the synthesis of Janus nanoparticles comprising iron oxi...

We fabricated chemically and shape-anisotropic colloids composed of silica rods coated with gold tips using a multistep process involving electric-field alignment and crystallization, microcontact printing, and selective metallization. Through direct observation, we found that these "Janus matchsticks" self-assemble into multipods (bi-, tri-, and tetrapods) of varying coordination number and pa...

GH signaling begins with activation of the GH receptor (GHR)-associated cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase, Janus kinase-2. GH-induced Janus kinase-2 activation leads to engagement of several signaling pathways, including the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), mitogen-activated protein kinase, phosphoinositol 3-kinase, and signal transducer and activator of transcription-5 (STAT5) pathways. ...
