We describe a homodigital neurovascular island flap for fingertip reconstruction in children and review the appearance and function of the reconstructed fingertips. Eleven children, with a mean age of 4 years (range: 2-7),who had sustained a fingertip injury with total or subtotal pulp loss were treated with a homodigital neurovascular island flap between 2007 and 2009. Fecal stomal incontinence is a problem that continues to defy surgical treatment. Previous attempts to create continent stomas using dynamic myoplasty have had limited success due to denervation atrophy of the muscle flap used in the creation of the sphincter and because of muscle fatigue resulting from continuous electrical stimulation. To address the problem of denervation atrophy, a stomal s...

Neurogenic pain can develop after microsurgical repair of a median nerve injury or when the lesion is underestimated and therefore not treated at all. Nerve injury with neuromatous pain may be associated with tumefaction at the wrist, increased pain and tingling when tapped [1]. The aim of the treatment is to both minimize pain and preserve residual function of the median nerve. Surgical proced...

We performed nail fold reconstruction after digital mucous cyst (DMC) excision using an island-type lateral finger flap on seven patients (four males and three females). Our procedure is a simple and useful method to repair minor nail fold lesion defects after DMC excision.

BACKGROUND Sensory recovery of skin flaps is generally poor unless they are elevated as an innervated flap. The aim of this study was to elucidate if Schwann cell (SC)-like cells differentiated from adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) could improve the cutaneous nerve regeneration in skin flaps. METHODS Microvascular island groin flaps were elevated bilaterally in 32 Lewis rats. On the right fl...

Total lower lip reconstruction was performed in a 72-year-old man following a squamous cell carcinoma resection. To obtain an optimal functional result and to avoid any additional facial scarring, a submental island flap was used in a one-stage procedure. After 2.5 years of follow-up, the patient is very satisfied with the shape and function of the lower lip.

The exposure of prosthetic vascular graft is a dangerous complication in revascularization procedures. In this case report, we describe a successful coverage of an exposed prosthetic femorofemoral vascular graft in the suprapubic area, with a vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous (VRAM) island flap.

Soft tissue defects of the great toe that include exposed tendon and bone present a reconstructive challenge for plastic surgeons. A distally based dorsalis pedis island flap based on the first dorsal metatarsal artery, which has been successfully used to cover the soft tissue defect following wide excision of melanoma of the big toe, is reported.

INTRODUCTION Acquired megalourethra (AMU) after repair of proximal hypospadias can be a serious complication. An observational retrospective study of its incidence among different types of repair was performed. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical charts of patients operated on for proximal hypospadias were reviewed. INCLUSION CRITERIA all primary hypospadias operated in 1991-2004, with the meatu...
