The design, synthesis, photophysical and significantly improved electrooptical properties of a series of red emitting cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes containing carbazolyl-acetylacetonate ligands are described.

The synthesis and reactivity of coordinatively unsaturated Rh and Ir complexes supported by the new bis(phosphino)silyl pincer ligand [kappa(3)-(2-Cy(2)PC(6)H(4))(2)SiMe](-) ([Cy-PSiP](-)) are reported, including the first example of facile, room temperature intermolecular arene C-H bond activation mediated by a silyl pincer complex.

Aromatic C-H silylation of neat arenes with 1-hydrosilatrane was found to be efficiently catalyzed by iridium catalysts composed of 1/2[Ir(OMe)(cod)]2 and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline at 120 °C to afford the corresponding silylated products in high yields. The silylated products can be used for the Hiyama cross-coupling reaction.

Iridium-catalysed allylic substitutions with anionic N-nucleophiles were achieved with regioselectivity of up to 49:1 and enantiomeric excess of up to 98%.
