BACKGROUND Cocaine is thought to stimulate the cardiovascular system by blocking peripheral norepinephrine reuptake. This study was designed to test the novel hypotheses that cocaine also stimulates the human cardiovascular system by (1) increasing central sympathetic outflow, or (2) decreasing parasympathetic control of heart rate. METHODS AND RESULTS In 14 healthy cocaine-naive humans, we m...

Introduction. Preclinical and clinical evidences for a role of oral probiotics in the management of allergic diseases are emerging. Aim. We aimed at testing the immunomodulatory effects of intranasal versus intragastric administration of Lactobacillus paracasei NCC2461 in a mouse model of allergic airway inflammation and the specificity of different probiotics by comparing L. paracasei NCC2461 ...

In recent years more and more studies have revealed the effect of extraneous oxytocin on the social behavior of dogs. The distribution of administered oxytocin in different physiologically relevant compartments is important because this knowledge forms the basis for the timing of behavior tests after the administration. Most behavioral studies rely on the non-invasive intranasal application of ...

BACKGROUND It is well documented that elderly individuals are at increased risk of cognitive decline after anesthesia. General anesthesia is believed to be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent studies suggest that anesthesia may increase the risk for cognitive decline and AD through promoting abnormal hyperphosphorylation of tau, which is crucial to neurodegeneration seen in AD. ...

PURPOSE Intravenous lorazepam is considered the drug of first choice for control of acute convulsive seizures. However, resource or personnel constraints necessitate the study of alternative routes and medications. This study compared the efficacy and adverse effects of intranasal versus intravenous lorazepam in children aged 6-14 years who presented with acute seizures. METHODS This was a ra...

We thankMunoz et al. (1) for the opportunity to provide additional rationale for the study design and interpretation of the data supporting the noninferiority of intranasal glucagon for treatment of insulin-induced hypoglycemia. Our study (2) was not designed to test recovery from severe hypoglycemia but rather recovery from insulin-induced hypoglycemia that ethically may only be produced under...

A direct proportion exists between the concentration of epidemic influenza virus used for intraperitoneal immunization of mice and the degree of immunity to intranasal infection which develops. Mice vaccinated with virus of a given strength resist infection with virus of the same concentration but not more. An irreducible minimum exists since mice vaccinated with less than ten intranasal lethal...

Mice were successfully immunized against the intestinal nematode Trichinella spiralis by intranasal administration of a 30-mer peptide antigen with cholera toxin B. Immunized mice developed antigen-specific serum immunoglobulin G1, intestinal immunoglobulin A, and a type 2-biased cytokine response. Intranasal immunization therefore generates the Th2-mediated responses required for immunity agai...

Previously, we established an intranasal mouse model of Klebsiella pneumoniae infection and validated its utility using a highly virulent wild-type strain and an avirulent capsular polysaccharide mutant. In the present study we compare the host responses to both infections by examining cytokine production, cellular infiltration, pulmonary histology, and intranasal immunization.
