The aims of this study are to describe the mean values of carotid intima-media thickness and how it increases with age, and to compare carotid injury in diabetics and hypertensive patients with that of controls. We included 562 subjects (121 diabetics, 352 hypertensive patients, 89 controls). The mean intima-media thickness was 0.781 mm in diabetics, 0.738 mm in hypertensive patients and 0.686 ...

This prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded end point, multicenter, parallel group, comparative study included 282 insulin-treated patients with T2DM free of a history of apparent cardiovascular diseases who were recruited at 12 clinical units and randomly allocated to either the sitagliptin group (n = 142) or the control group (n = 140). The primary outcomes were changes in mean and maxi...

Figure 1 shows differences in treatment-induced delta change in carotid IMT relative to baseline, according to various pre-defined risk factors for atherosclerosis. These data suggest that treatment with DPP-4 inhibitors seem to prevent the progression of carotid atherosclerosis regardless of disease burden.

OBJECTIVE Intima-media thickness (IMT) seems associated with risk of Alzheimer disease (AD). Homocysteine (hcy) is a risk factor for vascular diseases and dementia. This study aimed at investigating the possible relationship among IMT, plasma hcy and C677T methylentetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphism in relation to cognitive status. METHODS Sixty-three patients with cognitive impai...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cross-sectional studies describe a positive association between common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) and carotid plaques (CP). However, longitudinal data on the predictive value of CCA-IMT for occurrence of CP are limited. Therefore, the role of increasing CCA-IMT in the atherosclerotic process is still discussed controversially. METHODS We investigate...

AIMS A hallmark of Fabry disease is the concomitant development of left-ventricular hypertrophy and arterial intima-media thickening, the pathogenesis of which is thought to be related to the presence of a plasmatic circulating growth-promoting factor. We therefore characterized the plasma of patients with Fabry disease in order to identify this factor. METHODS AND RESULTS Using a classical b...

BACKGROUND/AIM To investigate the age- and sex-associated carotid intima media thickness (clMT) changes in healthy children to determine the age- and sex-specific normal range of values for childhood. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study examined 91 healthy school-age children aged 7-15 years prospectively. Standardized sonographic cIMT measurements and analyses were performed. Body mass index an...
