Traditionally, the design of a transportation system has focused on one of the two systems that comprise the transportation architecture, the vehicle or the network design. However, to define a systems level architecture for a transportation system, it is necessary to expand the system definition during the design process to include the network definition, the vehicle architecture, and the oper...

Hitherto, instrumentation network design methodologies have been based solely upon sensor capital costs. Within this framework the cost of new instrumentation is minimized subject to constraints indicating the desired level of performance. While, these formulations account for the cost of a network, they do not reflect the potential benefit of adding sensors. To capture this potential profit, w...

This paper introduces the concept of Integrated Structures and Materials Design (ISMD). ISMD combines materials engineering and structural engineering for the purpose of more effectively achieving targeted structural performance, by adopting material composite properties as the shared link. An application example, design of a bridge deck link-slab, is used to illustrate the essential elements o...

In this paper the modeling of motion control system with Variable Structure System (VSS) theory using Matlab/Simulink and Caspoc is elaborated. The control is modeled in Simulink, while the power converter is modeled in Caspoc. This has advantages on both sides. Powerful toolboxes existing for Simulink can be used and the power electronics can be modeled in detail in the dedicated power electro...

This paper describes a design support system which goes beyond the support facilities offered by the current generation of CASE tools. We have examined the entire design process, and we propose that the early stages of conceptual design need a more flexible system than is currently offered by existing design methods. Our toollthe Designer's Notepad (DNp)) allorvs rough designs to be created and...

Data center design is a tedious and expensive process. Recently, this process has become even more challenging as users of cloud services expect to have guaranteed levels of availability, durability and performance. A new challenge for the service providers is to find the most cost-effective data center design and configuration that will accommodate the users’ expectations, on ever-changing wor...

The long term impact of MEMS technology will be in its ability to integrate novel sensing and actuation functionality on traditional computing and communication devices enabling the ubiquitous digital computer to interact with the world around it. The design of such integrated systems will occur at the system level, driven primarily by the application. Methodologies that ease the integration of...

This paper revisits the notion of context from an interaction design perspective. Since the emergence of the research fields of Computer supported cooperative work and Ubiquitous computing, the notion of context has been discussed from different theoretical approaches and in different research traditions. One of these approaches is Embodied Interaction. This theoretical approach has in particul...

In the present work, an integrated method of pole shape design optimization for reduction of torque pulsation components in permanent magnet synchronous motors is developed. A progressive design process is presented to find feasible optimal shapes. This method is applied on the pole shape optimization of two prototype permanent magnet synchronous motors, i.e., 4-poles/6-slots and 4-poles-12slots.
