abstract: the experience of last earthquakes has shown the vulnerability of most of structures. this has been caused the speeding up of the seismic evaluation and retrofitting of projects in iran. in this regard, the instructions for seismic rehabilitation of the existing buildings have been published and are currently beiong used in the evaluation and retrofitting projects. the experience of r...

Pattern recognition on seismic data is a useful technique for generating seismic facies maps that capture changes in the geological depositional setting. Seismic facies analysis can be performed using the supervised and unsupervised pattern recognition methods. Each of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we compared and evaluated the capability of two unsuperv...

a new and significant source of information on earthquake studies has been provided by space geodesy. the data which are gathered by various techniques of space geodesy, can quantify potential of seismic activity in the region of interest. to achieve this goal, the main advantage of extra-terrestrial geodetic data in comparison with the conventional data from geology and seismology is the abili...

Seismic study of canyon sites has always been one of the important fields of seismic studies because of massive structures such as dams that are built in such sites. Jointed rock mass in rock canyon sites is one of the main site effects that can change the seismic waves. In this research, we studied the influence of this factor on the scattering of seismic waves. To fulfil this goal, we employe...

Evaluation of seismic behavior of offshore platforms is one of the important design steps in seismic regions. Nevertheless, because of complication and time cost of these methods, engineers usually do not study them deeply. Endurance Time (ET) method is a good solution for this problem. In this method, with acceptance of a reasonable region of errors, the time of analysis can be reduced conside...

here in, an application of a new seismic inversion algorithm in one of iran’s oilfields is described. stochastic (geostatistical) seismic inversion, as a complementary method to deterministic inversion, is perceived as contribution combination of geostatistics and seismic inversion algorithm. this method integrates information from different data sources with different scales, as prior informat...

Performance based seismic design (PBSD) is a cogent design approach that allows engineers to design structures with a predictable seismic performance for a specified level of hazard. In contrast to the conventional limit state or strength and serviceability based design in which a structure is designed to withstand severe load combinations and be functional under normal load conditions, PBSD go...

Seismic anisotropy is an efficient way to investigate the deformation field within the upper mantle. In the framework of rigid tectonic plates, we make use of recent tomographic models of azimuthal anisotropy for deriving the best rotation pole of the Pacific plate in the uppermost 200km of the mantle. It is found to be in good agreement with current plate motion (NUVEL1, HS3 and NNR). However,...

This paper reports on the damage of Wushi bridge in a recent Taiwan 921 earthquake. Damage to Wushi bridge appeared in the superstructure, the substructure and the approaches. Typical types of damage are discussed and illustrated in this paper. A review of the bridge design specifications in Taiwan is also presented to give the background on the seismic design of Taiwan highway bridges.

Pletser et al. performed a seismic-refraction survey on Devon Island with the goal of assessing the feasibility of astronauts carrying out such operations on Mars to detect subsurface water. We demonstrate that the seismic analysis is fundamentally flawed. The survey performed in this test will likely bear little resemblance to future crewed geophysical surface operations, and better methods ex...
