Background: Strongyloides stercoralis is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. S. stercoralis is the only nematodes with the ability to multiply in its host's body via autoinfection transmission. Larvae detection in faeces is difficult partly because of low egg production and irregular larvae excretion in faeces. Serologic tests (ELISA, IFA) are also diagnostic, however, S...

background/objective: development of a new enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa) for screening human blood serum and plasma for antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (hiv1) and type 2 (hiv2) as hiv1/2rec elisa diagnostic kit based on e. coli derived soluble recombinant proteins.   methods : polypeptides corresponding to hiv1 gp41 and hiv2 gp36 immunodominant regions and hiv1 gag...

Anthrax is an endemic infection in many countries, particularly in the developing world. The causative agent, Bacillus anthracis, mediates disease through the secretion of binary exotoxins. Until recently, research into adaptive immunity targeting this bacterial pathogen has largely focused on the humoral response to these toxins. There is, however, growing recognition that cellular immune resp...

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis is the causative agent of Johne's disease, a chronic enteritis in ruminants. A gene homologous to that of 35-kDa antigen of Mycobacterium leprae was cloned and sequenced from Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. The database searches revealed 82.79% and 95.67% similarities of its nucleotide sequence, with those of immunodominant 35-kDa protein of M. le...

During DNA sequence analysis of cosmid L373 from the Mycobacterium leprae genome, an open reading frame of 1.4 kb encoding a protein with some homology to the immunodominant 34-kDa protein of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, but lacking significant serological activity, was detected. The DNA sequence predicted a signal peptide with a modified lipoprotein consensus sequence, but the protein prove...

We report a case of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 infection not detected by a highly sensitive combined antigen-antibody assay. The virus was a subtype B strain harboring a unique sequence within the immunodominant epitope of the transmembrane glycoprotein. Immunochemical analysis indicated that this sequence was probably responsible for the failure to detect HIV antibodies.

Ovine progressive pneumonia virus (OPPV) is a lentivirus which causes a progressive disease in sheep. Immunodominant epitopes have been identified in the envelope gp40 glycoprotein. Synthetic peptides representing these regions are able to detect the presence of OPPV antibodies in 96% of infected sheep.

Vaccines with synthetic peptides induce the immune response to epitopes that bind to several HLA alleles. By using a TEPITOPE algorithm, we selected and analyzed the T-cell responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 29 paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) patients to peptides of the immunodominant gp43 antigen of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the causative agent of PCM.
