BACKGROUND Chronic renal failure is an important and common complication of diabetes mellitus; hence, renal transplantation is a frequent and the acceptable treatment in patients with diabetic nephropathy requiring renal replacement therapy. On the other hand, renal transplantation and its conventional treatment can lead to increased diabetes outbreak in normoglycemic recipients. Also, uncontro...

Hyperglycemia is becoming recognized as an important risk factor for microvascular dysfunction. We hypothesized that short-term hyperglycemia, either on the scale of hours or weeks, alters the barrier function and the volume of the endothelial glycocalyx and decreases functional capillary density and deformability of the red blood cells (RBCs). All experiments were performed in anesthetized, me...

PURPOSE Insulin-like growth factor-I receptor and phosphoinositide 3-kinase/AKT/mammalian target of rapamycin pathways are among the most active areas of drug discovery in cancer research. However, due to their integral roles in insulin signaling, inhibitors targeting these pathways often lead to hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia. We investigated the mechanism of hyperglycemia induced by GSK69...

Hyperglycemia, the diagnostic feature of diabetes also occurs in non-diabetics associated with chronic inflammation and systemic insulin resistance. Since the increased risk of active TB in diabetics has been linked to the severity and duration of hyperglycemia, we investigated what effect diet-induced hyperglycemia had on the severity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection in non-diabet...

Hemichorea-hemiballism (HCHB) syndrome, which is most commonly related to non-ketotic hyperglycemia, is a rare type of chorea. Here, we present an unusual case of HCHB syndrome who was not a known case of diabetes. This case highlights the importance of recognising underlying non-ketotic hyperglycemia, as control of hyperglycemia is helpful in the quick relief of symptoms.

BACKGROUND Intermittent hepatic inflow occlusion (IHIO) is associated with acute hyperglycemia during living donor hepatectomy when the ischemia is prolonged. Bilirubin is a potent antioxidant to play an important role for maintaining insulin sensitivity and preventing hyperglycemia. Thus, we aimed to test whether serum bilirubin level is associated with prolonged IHIO-induced intraoperative hy...

Hyperglycemia in acute stroke patients increases cerebral infarct size and worsens neurologic outcome with and without preexisting diabetes mellitus. Hyperglycemia results from metabolic alterations in glucose metabolism, and is most common in patients with acute illness such as stroke. Strict control of hyperglycemia with intensive insulin therapy has been shown to dramatically decrease hospit...
