The jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) plant produces esters of long-chain alcohols and fatty acids (waxes) as a seed lipid energy reserve. This is in contrast to the triglycerides found in seeds of other plants. We purified an alcohol-forming fatty acyl-coenzyme A reductase (FAR) from developing embryos and cloned the cDNA encoding the enzyme. Expression of a cDNA in Escherichia coli confers FAR ac...

syn-1,2-Amino alcohols are prevalent motifs in a diverse range of important small molecules such as natural products, pharmaceuticals, and asymmetric catalysts. The majority of methods for selectively constructing 1,2-amino alcohols rely on functional group interconversions or C-C bond-forming reactions using preoxidized materials.1 Selective methods for directly installing nitrogen functionali...

Mn(II) salen complex immobilized on nano silicagel was prepared by incorporating Mn(II) salen complex into a nanosilica matrix and characterized by TGA, XRD, atomic absorption spectroscopy and was successfully applied as catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols. Oxidation of a series of alcohols in acetonitrile over immobilized Mn(II) salen complex using tetrabutylammonium peroxymonosulfate (TBAO...

A formal homogeneous gold-catalyzed A3-coupling, starting from benzyl alcohols, is reported for the straightforward synthesis of propargylamines. This first process where these highly valuable compounds have been synthesized, corresponding alcohols in a one-pot oxidation procedure using MnO2, followed by HAuCl4·3H2O catalyzed multicomponent reaction. The final products are obtained with very go...

Substoichiometric loadings of DBU catalyse the efficient 1,4-addition of alcohols and non-nucleophilic amines such as pyrrole to activated alkenes; the application of this methodology in a one-pot synthesis of a natural product, and as a novel strategy for the synthesis of mono-protected 1,3-carbonyl compounds is reported.

Biosynthesis approaches for the production of higher alcohols as a source of alternative fossil fuels have garnered increasing interest recently. However, there is little information available in the literature about using undirected whole-cell mutagenesis (UWCM) in vivo to improve higher alcohols production. In this study, for the first time, we approached this question from two aspects: first...

Here, we show the one-step synthesis of N-alkylated anilines from nitrobenzenes and alcohols catalyzed by nano-gold catalyst. The yields to N-alkylated anilines were ∼90% under mild conditions. The mechanism of this reaction was explored. It shows promise for clean and simple synthesis of N-alkylated anilines.

A brief, enantioselective synthesis of a hydroxymethyl-cis-1,3-cyclopentenediol building block is presented. This scaffold allows access to the cis-1,3-cyclopentanediol fragments found in a variety of biologically active natural and non-natural products. This rapid and efficient synthesis is highlighted by the utilization of the palladium-catalyzed enantioselective allylic alkylation of dioxano...

During this study, we report the green synthesis of  magnetic copper ferrite nanoparticles using tragacanth gum as a reducing and stabilizing agent by the sol-gel method. The green synthesized CuFe2O4 MNPs are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and scanning electron microscopy...

The influence of protecting groups on the synthesis of regioand stereodefined vinyl tellurides derived from the reaction of BuTeNa and propargylicor homo-propargylic alcohols showed that TIPS silyl ether is useful as a regiodirecting group. The application of the methodology to the synthesis of a fragment of (±)-Seselidiol, a natural product, demonstrated the applicability of the new methodology.
