We propose a path loss model with an over-roof propagation path between mobile terminals in residential areas. A double knife-edge diffraction model shows that over-roof propagation loss can be accurately estimated. Measurement results confirm the estimation accuracy of the new model.

In the present study we examined the influence of spatial filtering on the N170-effect, a relatively early face-selective ERP difference associated with face detection. We compared modulation of the N170-effect using spatially filtered stimuli that either facilitated feature analysis or impeded configural analysis. The salience of inner face components was enhanced by presenting them in isolati...

Human cortical evoked responses elicited by patterns are very size and focus dependent, but those produced by moving laser speckle patterns (LASCERs) remain similar in amplitude and subjective sharpness over a wide (+/- 20 D) variation in added lens power. Moreover, cortical signal amplitudes evoked by speckle displays with high average spatial frequencies are significantly larger than those re...

This paper revisits a model for elliptic curves over Q introduced by Huff in 1948 to study a diophantine problem. Huff’s model readily extends over fields of odd characteristic. Every elliptic curve over such a field and containing a copy of Z/4Z× Z/2Z is birationally equivalent to a Huff curve over the original field. This paper extends and generalizes Huff’s model. It presents fast explicit f...

We propose and experimentally demonstrate real-time locating and speed measurement of fibre fuse by analysing the Doppler shift of reflected light using optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). Our method can detect the start of a fibre fuse within 200 ms which is equivalent to a propagation distance of about 10 cm in standard single-mode fibre. We successfully measured instantaneous spee...

This paper quantifies the impact of providing a shortterm excess active power support of a variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) and effect of super magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit on frequency control, particularly temporary minimum frequency (TMF) term. To demonstrate the effect of these factors on the power system frequency, a three-area power system is considered as a test system.

We demonstrate what we believe to be the first real-time impairment-cancellation system for group-velocity dispersion (GVD) and differential group delay (DGD) for a 640 Gb/s single-channel signal. Simultaneous compensation of two independent parameters is demonstrated by feedback control of separate GVD and DGD compensators using an impairment monitor based on an integrated all-optical radio-fr...

We quantified OKN asymmetry in 140 normal infants, 3-24 months old, by varying spatial frequency to determine OKN acuity for temporal-to-nasal (T-N) versus nasal-to-temporal (N-T) motion. At all ages, OKN acuity was asymmetrical (better for T-N than for N-T motion) but the size of the asymmetry decreased from 3.2 to 0.7 octaves between 3-24 months, primarily because of improvements in OKN acuit...
