Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) has been associated with the genesis of leukoplakias, epithelial atypia, and oral cancer. Tobacco habits, such as snuff dipping, are also definitely corre lated with this type of lesion. The normal cytolytic HSV-1 infection can, after in vitro inactivation, transform cells. Extracts of snuff were prepared and assayed for their ability to inhibit HSV-1 replica...

Human Herpes Viruses (HSV) contain eight pathogens. HSV is one of the most widespread viruses in the world and due to the simplicity of the way of transmission the number of people infected with the virus has increased in per year. The virus creates a wide range of diseases, including mucosal herpes infections and deadly herpes simplex encephalitis. Today, for the diagnosis of HSV infection se...

Mice lacking the Stat1 interferon signaling gene were infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or an attenuated recombinant lacking virion host shutoff (Delta vhs). Delta vhs virus-infected Stat1(-/-) mice showed levels of replication equivalent to that of the wild-type virus-infected control mice but reduced relative to wild-type virus-infected Stat1(-/-) mice. Stat1 deficiency reliev...

PURPOSE The antiviral activity of Indian Medicinal plant extract Swertia chirata was tested against Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type-1, using multiple approaches both at cellular and molecular level. METHODS Cytotoxicity, plaque reduction, virus infectivity, antigen expression and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were conducted to test the antiviral activity of the plant extract. RESUL...

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 DNA isomerization was studied using a uniquely designed amplicon that mimics the viral genomic structure. The results revealed that amplicon concatemers frequently contain adjacent amplicon units with their segments in opposed orientations. These unusual concatemers were generated through homologous recombination, which does not require HSV DNA as the source of...

Background & Objectives: Herpes viruses can cause diseases in the clinical range. The virus can cause infection in various body parts, especially eyes and nervous system. The aim of this study was at evaluating  the Real-Time TaqMan probe PCR in diagnosing and monitoring of the patients with suspected HSV infections.Materials & Methods: More than a thousand patients with suspected HSV infection...

Human brain cells were examined for the presence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) DNA sequences by in situ hybridisation. Viral genome was detected in immunosuppressed patients with virological evidence of past HSV infection but not in immunosuppressed patients with no such evidence. In patients who had not been immunosuppressed, no HSV DNA sequences were detectable.

Infection of BALB/c mouse cells with UV-irradiated herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 resulted in activation of a xenotropic type C virus detected by infectious center formation in permissive rat cells. The levels of type C virus activated by HSV were related to the UV dose and the multiplicity of infection used. The ability of HSV to activate type C virus was eliminated by heat-inactivat...

PURPOSE To detect simultaneously herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), type 2 (HSV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in ocular specimens suspected of indicating viral infection, and to compare the results of multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with those of uniplex PCR. METHODS Forty specimens, collected from 33 patients with clinically suspected herpes virus oc...
