Glutathione and soluble thiol content were examined in a broad spectrum of bacteria. Significant soluble thiol was present in all cases. The thiol compound was glutathione in most of the gram-negative bacteria but not in most of the gram-positive bacteria studied. Glutathione was absent in four anerobes and one microaerophile but was present in a blue-green bacterium. The glutathione content of...

A novel theranostic divalent vancomycin analog using a planar 1,8-diazapyrene moiety as a rigid scaffold exhibits potent and selective antibacterial activity against Gram (+) bacteria including vancomycin-resistant strains, while having minimal influence on Gram (-) bacteria and mammalian cells. Moreover, this theranostic analog can be also applied for selective two-photon fluorescence imaging ...

Introduction The purpose of this lecture is to introduce you to terminology used in microbiology. The lecture will: 1. cover different classification schemes for grouping bacteria, especially the use of the Gram stain 2. describe the different types of bacteria 3. discuss bacterial structure and the function of the different bacterial components 4. discuss the distinguishing characteristics of ...

DW-224a showed the most potent in vitro activity among the quinolone compounds tested against clinical isolates of gram-positive bacteria. Against gram-negative bacteria, DW-224a was slightly less active than the other fluoroquinolones. The in vivo activities of DW-224a against gram-positive bacteria were more potent than those of other quinolones.

Objective. To examine whether Gram staining can influence the choice of antibiotic for the treatment of peritonsillar abscess. Methods. Between 2005 and 2009, a total of 57 cases of peritonsillar abscess were analyzed with regard to cultured bacteria and Gram staining. Results. Only aerobes were cultured in 16% of cases, and only anaerobes were cultured in 51% of cases. Mixed growth of aerobes ...

Lysis by KOH and hydrolysis of L-alanine-4-nitroanilide were compared with the Gram reaction of aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic bacteria. Both tests correlated well with the Gram reaction with nonfermentative bacilli and Bacillus species, whereas they did not correlate with nonsporulating anaerobes. Only campylobacteria were KOH positive and L-alanine-4-nitroanilide and gram negative.

Results: Out of a total of 1970 specimens, 1094 (55.5 %) were positive by culture. A total of 1462 strains were isolated: 753 Gram positive (Gram+), 661 Gram negative (Gram-) and 48 anaerobic bacteria. The number of specimens yielding one, two or more different strains was 788, 244 and 62, respectively. Gram + bacteria, in 44.7 % of positive samples were a single isolate. The most commonly isol...
