Inhibition of angiogenesis is a target in the treatment of a variety of malignancies. Sorafenib is an oral inhibitor of multiple tyrosine kinases involved in tumor angiogenesis. A related case of ophthalmologic toxicity has been reported with another vascular endothelial growth factor receptor inhibitor, sunitinib. We report the first case of retinal tear possibly associated with sorafenib.

Light and electron microscopic study of synovial specimens from four patients with the Milwaukee shoulder syndrome disclosed vascular congestion, villous and focal synovial lining cell hyperplasia, occasional giant cells, and fibrin deposition both within and on the surface of the synovium. Although these changes are non-specific, the finding of basic calcium phosphate crystal aggregates in all...

OBJECTIVES Although human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated uveitis has been well recognized in Japan, related studies in Brazil are scarce. We performed a serologic survey for HTLV-1 infection among patients with uveitis and investigated the ocular findings in HTLV-1-asymptomatic carriers. METHODS One hundred ninety serum samples from patients with uveitis of determined (n...

PURPOSE The aim is to describe tools and techniques that can be used to deal with total retinal detachment (open funnel) and associated proliferative vitreoretinopathy due to a 360-degree giant retinal break following ocular trauma. Setting/Venue: The video (available at www. karger.com/doi/10.1159/000444811) was created at the Ophthalmology Department, Faculty of Medicine Kasr Al Ainy, Cairo U...

The various procedures used in the operative treatment of retinal detachment aim at promoting adhesive choroiditis at the retinal tear. Based' on expertmental and clinical observations, and especially on operative results, the author believes that, apart from adhesive choroiditis, it is necessary to create an adhesive episcleral reaction, the importance, of which is paramount, because it afford...

When blunt trauma causes anterior posterior globe compression and then expansion of the globe in horizontal manner, a tear of the inner choroid along with Bruch’s membrane and the RPE will form due to inflexible nature of these tissues in contrast to sclera and retina that they don’t frequently rupture in blunt trauma. Choroidal ruptures can have crescent shape and can be isolated or multiple, ...

Aim. To investigate the anatomical success rates of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) after primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). Methods. This retrospective study was conducted between December 2008 and October 2014 at Nagasaki University Hospital. The preoperative data recorded included the lens status, location of the retinal tear, whether a tear was visualized, presence of multiple tea...

A mechanics-based mathematical model for retinal detachment is developed, incorporating an energy-based criterion for propagation. Retinas with and without central tears are considered and contraction of the vitreous and extension of its fibrils, along with a pressure difference across the retina, are taken as the stimuli for detachment propagation. In addition to the equations of motion, bound...

We report a case of choroidal metastasis simulating uveal effusion syndrome. This patient with uveal metastasis from lung carcinoma presented with decreased vision in the left eye. Fundoscopic examination revealed pigmentary clumping, multiple choroidal nodules and serous retinal detachment. Fluorescein angioraphy revealed a leopard spots pattern similar to uveal effusion syndrome. Ultrasound r...

Injection of gas into the eye, followed by face-down positioning, is a common protocol for the reseating of the retina in posterior and superior retinal tears and breaks. The physical mechanism by which injected gas helps reattach retinal flaps is often ascribed to the 'buoyancy' force of the injected gas bubble. The various forces at play in this system (surface tension and buoyancy) were calc...
