OBJECTIVES The development of resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents has limited treatment options for gonorrhoea. The potential emergence of cephalosporin resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and cephalosporin allergy in some patients make it necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of other available antimicrobial agents. Gentamicin is widely available in the USA and is used for gonorrhoea...

BACKGROUND Growth of drug resistance is related to number of microbial characteristics, selective pressure by antibiotic use and social and technical vicissitudes that enhance the transmission of antibiotic resistant organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate antimicrobial-resistance of Escherichia coli isolated from children in Shahid Sadoughi hospital of Yazd. MATERIALS AND METHODS...

The impact of different types of enzymatic resistance on the in vivo antibacterial activity of aminoglycosides (amikacin, gentamicin, and netilmicin) was studied in the rabbit endocarditis model with four strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Animals were treated in a manner simulating the administration of a single daily human dose. Amikacin had no effect on the three kanamycin-resistant strains d...

Using time-kill methodology, we investigated the interactions of fosfomycin with meropenem or colistin or gentamicin against 17 genetically distinct Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates carrying blaKPC-2. Synergy was observed with meropenem or colistin against 64.7 and 11.8% of tested isolates, while the combination with gentamicin resulted in indifference. All studied combinations showed im...

We report a new Salmonella genomic island 1 variant antibiotic resistance gene cluster called SGI1-L in a Salmonella enterica serovar Newport isolate containing a dfrA15 gene cassette conferring resistance to trimethoprim. The isolate carried another class 1 integron containing the aacC5 and aadA7 gene cassettes conferring resistance to gentamicin and streptomycin/spectinomycin, respectively.

This study was performed to determine the susceptibility patterns and the colonization rate of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) in a population of pregnant women. From January 2004 to December 2006, vaginal-rectal swabs were obtained from 1105 women attending Dr. Ramón Madariaga Hospital, in Posadas, Misiones, Argentina. The carriage rate of GBS among pregnant women was 7.6%. A total of 62 GBS strai...

The influence of medium composition, pH, serum, and magnesium on the action of tobramycin is compared to that on the action of gentamicin. The minimum inhibitory concentration of tobramycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, and streptomycin was determined for 472 strains including 19 species: tobramycin was found to be the most active against Ps. aeruginosa and kanamycin against Providence, but gentamici...

A rapid bioassay for gentamicin levels in serum was developed by using a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae that has multiple resistance to antibiotics. Assays were comparable when performed on either small or large petri plates, and results were available in 2 to 4 h. Studies showed an overall recovery of 97.6% for gentamicin alone or 104.5% in the presence of commonly used antibiotics. The proce...

INTRODUCTION Knowledge of antimicrobial resistance and trends in resistance patterns among major pathogens causing infections in young infants (up to 90 days of life) is an important component of developing community-based management strategies. Hospital-based data suggest alarming rates of resistance to ampicillin and gentamicin, the first-line antimicrobial agents recommended by WHO for treat...

OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant faecal Escherichia coli from adult volunteers from urban (U) areas in Kenya, Mexico, Peru and the Philippines, and non-urban (NU) locations in Curacao, Mexico, Venezuela, Ghana, Zimbabwe and the Philippines. METHODS Faecal samples of adult volunteers (n=1290) were analysed in one laboratory for the presence of antimicrobial-resist...
