We report characterization of a genotype G5P[7] human rotavirus (HRV) from a child in Cameroon who had diarrhea. Sequencing of all 11 gene segments showed similarities to > or =5 genes each from porcine and human rotaviruses. This G5P[7] strain exemplifies the importance of heterologous animal rotaviruses in generating HRV genetic diversity through reassortment.
The popularity of genetically modified insect resistant (Bt) cotton has promoted large scale monocultures, which is thought to worsen the problem of crop genetic homogeneity. Information on genetic diversity among Bt cotton varieties is lacking. We evaluated genetic divergence among 19 Bt cotton genotypes using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Thirty-seven of 104 surveyed primers were...
The genetic diversity of group B Streptococcus in young, nonpregnant women is not well studied. Application of multilocus sequence analysis to 85 group B Streptococcus strains recovered from college students revealed similarities and differences in distribution of group B Streptococcus lineages, compared with that of previously studied pregnant populations, and revealed that strains of 1 clone ...
Human infections with Salmonella enterica serovar Napoli are uncommon in Europe. However, these infections represented 5.9% of salmonellosis cases in Italy during 2014-2015. The source of infection is unknown. We analyzed surveillance data and compared strain genetic similarities and found that contaminated vegetables and surface water are probable sources of human infection.
Phylogeny is the evolutionary history of a species or group of species. To reconstruct phylogeny, scientists use systematics, an analytical approach to classifying the diversity and determining the evolutionary relationships of living and extinct organisms. o Evidence used to reconstruct phylogenies can be obtained from the fossil record and from morphological, biochemical, and genetic simi...
Evidence from studies with adult rodents indicates that individual recognition enables distinctions between familiar individuals irrespective of relatedness (but including close kin) and a separate mechanism enables discriminations based on genetic relatedness without prior familiarity. For example, adult mice could assess the extent of their genetic relatedness to unfamiliar individuals using ...
Motivation: To uncover the genetic basis of complex disease, individuals are often measured at a large number of genetic variants (usually SNPs) across the genome. GemTools provides computationally efficient tools for modeling genetic ancestry based on SNP genotypes. The main algorithm creates an eigenmap based on genetic similarities, and then clusters subjects based on their map position. Thi...
Piscirickettsia salmonis, the etiologic agent of piscirickettsiosis, is a systemic disease of salmonid fish. Variations in virulence and mortality have been observed during epizootics at different geographical regions and in laboratory experiments with isolates from these different locations. This raises the possibility that biogeographical patterns of genetic variation might be a significant f...
