Recently, it has been proposed to use Bernstein races for implementing non-regression testing in noisy genetic programming. We study the population size of such a (1+λ) evolutionary algorithm applied to a noisy fitness function optimization by a progress rate analysis and experiment it on a policy search application.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review summarizes recently published large-scale efforts elucidating the genetic architecture of lipid levels. A supplemental file with all genetic loci is provided for research purposes and we performed bioinformatic analyses of the genetic variants to give an oversight of involved pathways. RECENT FINDINGS In total, 52 genes for HDL cholesterol, 42 genes for LDL chole...

This chapter focuses on the gene therapy advances made in relation to Duchenne muscular dystrophy and discusses principles and perspectives of strategies currently being developed. The chapter explains the genetic mutations that cause Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) and the differences between the two are discussed in relation to disease severity. The histo...

Rolandic epilepsy (RE), or benign epilepsy of childhood with centrotemporal spikes (BECT), is the most frequent idiopathic partial epilepsy syndrome of childhood, where the "idiopathic" implies a genetic predisposition. Although RE has long been presumed to have a genetic component, clinical and genetic studies have shown a complex inheritance pattern. Furthermore, the underlying major genetic ...

The recent completion of the Human Genome Project has provided an unprecedented opportunity for researchers to identify high-risk patients and improve human health through the use of technologies that integrate the entire genome. In the past, disorders that yielded their secrets to genetic investigations tended to be rare, single-gene conditions (eg, Brugada syndrome, Liddle syndrome). Today, a...

A Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) mapping study is under way to analyse the genetic determinism underlying sugarcane smut resistance. A total of 1295 polymorphic AFLP markers have been generated on a population of 200 individuals derived from a cross between R 570 (resistant) and MQ 76/53 (highly susceptible). This population is under evaluation for its resistance to smut in the field over three...

The recent availability of whole-genome sequencing data affords tremendous power for statistical inference. With this, there has been great interest in the development of polymorphism-based approaches for the estimation of population genetic parameters. These approaches seek to estimate, for example, recently fixed or sweeping beneficial mutations, the rate of recurrent positive selection, the ...

This chapter will cut to the core of the main topic of my dissertation by analyzing the way in which enhancing technologies that are aimed at modifying the genome or gene expression of the individuals within the present generation may influence the potential interests of future generations. So far, my strategy has been to clarify my working concepts which are recurrent and of great significance...
