We consider parallel global optimization of derivative-free expensive-to-evaluate functions, and proposes an efficient method based on stochastic approximation for implementing a conceptual Bayesian optimization algorithm proposed by [10]. To accomplish this, we use infinitessimal perturbation analysis (IPA) to construct a stochastic gradient estimator and show that this estimator is unbiased.
This article considers a linear regression model with some missing observations on the response variable and presents two estimators of regression coefficients employing the approach of minimum risk estimation. Asymptotic properties of these estimators along with the traditional unbiased estimator are analyzed and conditions, that are easy to check in practice, for the superiority of one estima...
It is argued that, contrary to common wisdom, unbiasedness is not always a well grounded requirement. It is shown that in many cases, for a given unbiased estimator there is a simply derived biased estimator which gives results closer to the true value.
In peer-to-peer networks, free riding is a major problem. Reputation management systems can be used to overcome this problem. Reputation estimation methods generally do not consider the uncertainties in the inputs. We propose a reputation estimation method using BLUE (Best Linear Unbiased estimator) estimator that consider uncertainties in the input variables.

One of the most promising active queue management schemes being proposed for deployment in the Internet is RED. However, research results on RED performance are highly mixed, especially in the field of tuning its parameters. In this paper, we revisit some features in RED and study them in greater details. We point out that RED in general does not possess proportional loss between flows as claim...

A common assumption in supervised learning is that the training and test input points follow the same probability distribution. However, this assumption is not fulfilled, e.g., in interpolation, extrapolation, or active learning scenarios. The violation of this assumption— known as the covariate shift—causes a heavy bias in standard generalization error estimation schemes such as cross-validati...
Care must be taken when interpreting the coefficients of dummy variables in semi-logarithmic regression models. Existing results in the literature provide the best unbiased estimator of the percentage change in the dependent variable, implied by the coefficient of a dummy variable, and of the variance of this estimator. We extend these results by establishing the exact sampling distribution of ...
Brownian motions on coalescent structures have a biological relevance, either as an approximation of the stepwise mutation model for microsatellites, or as a model of spatial evolution considering the locations of individuals at successive generations. We discuss estimation procedures for the dispersal parameter of a Brownian motion defined on coalescent trees. First, we consider the mean squar...
