Recent studies have used flow cytometry (FCM) as an important alternative method to determine the antifungal susceptibility of yeasts compared to the broth microdilution Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) reference procedure. We present a comparative study of the broth microdilution method and flow cytometry to assess the in vitro antifungal susceptibility of Cryptococcus neofor...

HYPOTHESIS The administration of fluconazole in intensive care unit (ICU) patients leads to the emergence of bacterial and fungal resistance. DESIGN Retrospective analysis of 2 patient cohorts: (1) critically ill patients treated in surgical, trauma, and medical ICUs between June 1997 and January 1999 who did and did not receive fluconazole; and (2) ICU patients with fungal infections and sen...

BACKGROUND Oro-Pharyngeal Candidiasis (OPC) continues to be considered the most common opportunistic fungal disease in HIV/AIDS patients globally. Azole antifungal agent has become important in the treatment of mucosal candidiasis in HIV patients. Presently, antifungal drug resistance is fast becoming a major problem particularly with the immune depleted population. OBJECTIVES This study was ...

Drug resistance is emerging in many important microbial pathogens, including Candida albicans. We performed fungal susceptibility tests with archived isolates obtained from 1984 through 1993 and fresh clinical isolates obtained from 1994 through 1997 by testing their susceptibilities to fluconazole, ketoconazole, and miconazole and compared the results to the rate of fluconazole use. All isolat...

background and purpose: candidiasis is a major fungal infection, and candida albicans is the major cause of infections in humans. the clinical and laboratory standards institute (clsi) developed new breakpoints for antifungal agents against c. albicans. in this multi-center study, we aimed to determine the drug susceptibility profile of c. albicans, isolated from iranian population according to...

One hundred clinical isolates of Candida albicans were tested for amphotericin B and fluconazole susceptibilities by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) broth microdilution test at center 1 (C1). The same isolates were tested blinded at center 2 (C2) by NCCLS and flow cytometry (FC) methods. The agreement between NCCLS and FC methods ranged from 96 to 99%.

An interlaboratory evaluation (seven centers) of VITEK2 System and Sensititre YeastOne® was conducted to test the antifungal susceptibilities of yeasts. The MICs of amphotericin B, fluconazole, flucytosine, and voriconazole were determined for 70 isolates of Candida spp. Our results demonstrated a higher interlaboratory agreement of VITEK 2 System than Sensititre YeastOne©. A good concordance b...

A comparative evaluation of the NCCLS macrodilution method, the E-test, and the Sensititre YeastOne Colorimetric Antifungal Panel for the susceptibility testing of fluconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin B, and flucytosine was conducted with 233 blood isolates of Candida species collected between 1994 and 1998 in Sweden. Antifungal susceptibility profiles of Candida albicans and non-C. albicans...
