We demonstrate the trapping of single atoms in evanescent field a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonator with standing wave optical dipole trap. present our progress towards an improved trap loading scheme.
*Correspondence: Colin J. R. Sheppard, Department of Nanophysics, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Via Morego 30, 16163 Genova, Italy e-mail: [email protected] We review Fourier methods used in the disciplines of electromagnetism and signal processing, with a view to reconciling differences in approach. In particular, Fourier methods well known in signal processing are applied to three-...
We study the dynamics of accelerating Bessel beams and their corresponding apodized version. Presenting a closed analytical form for the intensity profile, we investigate the contribution of evanescent fields during the evolution for both cases. OCIS codes: (050.1960) Diffraction theory; (070.7345) Wave propagation Airy beams, as the first class of paraxial non-diffracting accelerating wave pac...
In this paper, we investigate the mutual hydrodynamic interactions between two different kinds of devices, namely, an Oscillating Wave Surge Converter modeled as an oscillating flap and a generic Heaving Wave Energy Converter modeled as a vertical truncated cylinder. A three-dimensional mathematical model based on linear potential flow theory is developed. It is assumed that the effects of the ...
Evanescent wave dynamic light scattering and Stokesian dynamics simulations were employed to study the dynamics of hard-sphere colloidal particles near a hard wall in concentrated suspensions. The evanescent wave averaged short-time diffusion coefficients were determined from experimental correlation functions over a range of scattering wave vectors and penetration depths. Stokesian dynamics si...
The contributions of homogeneous and evanescent waves to two-dimensional near-field diffraction patterns of scalar optical fields are examined in detail. The total plane-integrated intensities of the two contributions are introduced as convenient measures of their relative importance. As an example, the diffraction of a plane wave by a slit is considered.
A fibre-optic sensor capable of detecting an immune reaction between fluorescently labelled antigens and antibodies bound at the waveguide surface is described. In a configuration where skew rays were detected, a signal level was found that made detection of a concentration of 10e9 M antigen possible. Keywork Fibre-optic sensor; Immune reactions The evanescent wave is a well known physical phen...
Using evanescent wave microscopy to study near-surface, semi-dilute polymer solution flows provides simultaneous access the mechanical behaviour of liquid and boundary condition at interfaces. Our results highlight importance electrostatic interactions between polymers bounding wall.
