We have measured the fully inclusive K+ → μ+ν(γ) absolute branching ratio with the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE, the Frascati φ–factory. From some 865,283 K+ → μ+ν(γ) decays obtained from a sample of ∼5.2 × 108 φ-meson decays, we find BR(K+ → μνμ(γ))=0.6366±0.0009stat.±0.0015syst., corresponding to an overall fractional error of 0.27%. Using recent lattice results on the decay constants of pseudosc...

The title compound, C6H12O6, a C-3 position epimer of glucose, was crystallized from an equimolar mixture of d- and l-allose. It was confirmed that d-allose (l-allose) formed β-pyran-ose with a (4) C 1 ((1) C 4) conformation in the crystal. In the crystal, molecules are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bond, forming a three-dimensional framework. The cell volume of the racemic β-d,l-allose is 739.36 (3...

Introduction: Cardiac arrhythmias, e.g. atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, are increasingly treated by electrophysiological (EP) interventions [1]. Applying MR for guiding these interventions offers advantages like 3D visualization of the cardiac soft tissue in relation to the catheter, visualization of the treatment effect and absence of ionizing radiation [2,3]. The step towards...

Ependymin, a prominent protein of the brain's extracellular fluid (ECF) was previously implicated in the consolidation of memory and in the activity-driven sharpening of the retinotectal projection. Because both these phenomena probably involve the growth and elaboration of appropriate synapses, we have tested whether ependymin can serve as a substrate for the growth of axons from goldfish reti...

We recently reported the development of several monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) to native human erythropoietin (Ep). In the present study we have used the two antibodies with highest affinity to develop a two-sided or sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure Ep in human serum. In this assay Ep is incubated in microtiter wells precoated with the first (IgE) anti-Ep antibody. A...

BACKGROUND Topical formulations of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), in particular diclofenac (DI), have become popular for treating various acute and chronic painful inflammatory conditions. OBJECTIVE To perform a literature review of (1) the use of topical NSAIDs; (2) the pharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of a medicated plaster (patch) containing d...

The homeostatic function of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) is dependent on a balance of EP receptor-mediated events. A disruption in this balance may contribute to the progression of renal injury. Although PGE(2) excretion is elevated in diabetes, the expression of specific EP receptor subtypes has not been studied in the diabetic kidney. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to characterize th...

In order to examine the possibility of multiple founding populations of anatomically modern Homo sapiens, we collected DNA sequence data from 10 X-chromosomal regions, 5 autosomal regions, and 1 Y-chromosomal region, in addition to mitochondrial DNA. Except for five regions which are genealogically uninformative and two other regions for which chimpanzee orthologs are not available, the ancestr...

Some characteristics of the process by which endogenous pyrogen (EP), the mediator of fever, is released from cells were examined by using human blood leukocytes incubated in vitro. Studies were designed to examine a possible role for leukocyte products, including EP, in the induction, augmentation, or suppression of pyrogen release by blood leukocytes. Products of stimulated leukocytes, includ...

Conventional electroporation (EP) by 0.1 to 1 kV/cm pulses longer than 100 micros, and supra-electroporation by 10 to 300 kV/cm pulses shorter than 1 micros cause different cellular effects. Conventional EP delivers DNA, proteins, small drugs, and fluorescent indicators across the plasma membrane (PM) and causes moderate levels of phosphatidylserine (PS) translocation at the PM. We hypothesize ...
