Acute lung injury (ALI) is characterized by pulmonary edema and acute inflammation leading to pulmonary dysfunction and potentially death. Early medical intervention may ameliorate the severity of ALI, but unfortunately, there are no reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis. We screened for biomarkers in a mouse model of ALI. In this model, inhalation of S. aureus enterotoxin A causes increased ...

A variant enterotoxin gene, referred to as sezA+, has been identified. Staphylococcus aureus FRI1106, a staphylococcal enterotoxin type D producer (Sed+), contained HindIII fragments of 3.8 and 9.4 kilobase pairs (kbp) that hybridized in Southern blot analysis to a probe containing only staphylococcal enterotoxin type A structural gene sequences. Presumably, probe A-624 hybridized to the 9.4-kb...

Escherichia coli isolated from 2,126 children in Thailand and the Philippines was examined for enterotoxin production and for DNA hybridization with synthetic oligonucleotide and cloned polynucleotide enterotoxin gene probes. A total of 233 infections with E. coli that were detected by one or more of these assays were identified. Of the infections, 75% (164/233) were identified by all three met...

Escherichia coli SA53 produces a new enterotoxin that has a biological activity similar to that of E. coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) but is not neutralized by antiserum against LT or cholera enterotoxin. Strain SA53 contained two plasmids, pRB1 (69.2 +/- 4.3 megadaltons) and pRB2 (57.6 +/- 5.3 megadaltons). Studies were undertaken to determine whether either plasmid was required for producti...

Three enterotoxins from the Aeromonas hydrophila diarrheal isolate SSU have been molecularly characterized in our laboratory. One of these enterotoxins is cytotoxic in nature, whereas the other two are cytotonic enterotoxins, one of them heat labile and the other heat stable. Earlier, by developing an isogenic mutant, we demonstrated the role of a cytotoxic enterotoxin in causing systemic infec...

BACKGROUND In the previous studies using the commercial ELISA kit, the existence of staphylococcal superantigens has been reported in synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). OBJECTIVES This study aimed to design molecular methods to detect staphylococcal enterotoxin C in synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this experimental study...

The potential of Staphylococcus aureus cheese isolates to grow and produce staphylococcal enterotoxin A under conditions typical for cheese making was investigated in three broth experiments. The effect of the concentration of undissociated lactic acid (HLac) in conjunction with specific pH values was studied by adjusting pH at a single concentration of lactic acid. First, the time-to-growth of...

Clostridium difficile enterotoxin (D-1) was detected in 13 symptomatic and nine asymptomatic neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit by latex agglutination test but was not found in 18 healthy neonates in two other newborn nurseries. Environmental contamination in the intensive care unit may have been the cause. An association between the presence of enterotoxin and clinical symptoms is di...

We investigated the biological properties of a novel staphylococcal enterotoxin-like putative toxin, staphylococcal enterotoxin-like toxin type R (SElR). Major histocompatibility complex class II molecules were required for T-cell stimulation by SElR. SElR stimulated T cells bearing receptors Vbeta 3, 11, 12, 13.2, and 14. These results suggested that SElR acts as a superantigen.

We report a rapid competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to screen Salmonella typhimurium strains for cholera-related enterotoxin antigens. Polymyxin B extracts of bacterial cells from syncase-glucose broth cultures of 7 of 15 strains gave positive results. The specificity of the test was confirmed with known heat-labile-enterotoxin-positive and -negative Escherichia coli strains which g...
