We investigated the impact of crystallographic orientation on the photocatalytic activity of single crystalline WO3 thin films prepared by molecular beam epitaxy on the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB). A clear effect is observed, with (111) being the most reactive surface, followed by (110) and (001). Photoreactivity is directly correlated with the surface free energy determined by densit...
We investigate how the coulombic Gibbs free energy and salt ion association per phosphate charge of DNA oligomers vary with oligomer size (i.e. number of charged residues ∣ZD∣) at 0.15 M univalent salt by non-linear Poisson Boltzmann (NLPB) analysis of all-atom DNA models. Calculations of these quantities ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) are performed for short and long double-strande...
The variation of the optical absorption of carbon nanotubes with their geometry has been a long-standing question at the heart of both metrological and applicative issues, in particular because optical spectroscopy is one of the primary tools for the assessment of the chiral species abundance of samples. Here, we tackle the chirality dependence of the optical absorption with an original method ...
The purpose of this work was to study the adhesion to polystyrene of two Candida parapsilosis strains, grown at 22 and 37 degrees C, in terms of hydrophobicity, surface charge, and interaction free energy. Growth temperature changed the surface properties of microorganisms, yielding a good correlation between thermodynamic predictions and adhesion behavior.
A calculation of the current-quark-mass-dependence of nucleon static electromagnetic properties is necessary in order to use observational data as a means to place constraints on the variation of Nature’s fundamental parameters. A Poincaré covariant Faddeev equation, which describes baryons as composites of confined-quarks and -nonpointlike-diquarks, is used to calculate this dependence. The re...
We present a first report of energetic charged particle observations at latitudes above 70ÆS from the COSPIN instruments on Ulysses during Ulysses’ recently completed pass over the Sun’s south polar regions. Solar energetic particles dominated the particle flux during most of the pass, and for > 30 MeV protons there was a close correspondence between intensity increases at IMP-8 near Earth and ...
The PHENIX experiment has established jet quenching at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV in Au+Au collisions. Recent measurements of Cu+Cu collisions at the same center-of-mass energy support a parton energy loss scenario. Furthermore, the onset of jet quenching was studied in Cu+Cu collisions for three center-of-mass energies 22.4, 62.4 and 200 GeV.
The temperature and viscosity dependence of the triplet energy transfer (TET) process in porphyrin dimers has been studied. A zinc porphyrin (donor) and a free base porphyrin (acceptor) are covalently linked together by rigid bridging chromophores at a center-center distance of 25 A. Due to the large donor-acceptor distance and the weakness of the spin forbidden transitions involved, neither di...
We present the first measurements of the pseudorapidity distribution of primary charged particles in Cu+Cu collisions as a function of collision centrality and energy, sqrt[s_{NN}]=22.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV, over a wide range of pseudorapidity, using the PHOBOS detector. A comparison of Cu+Cu and Au+Au results shows that the total number of produced charged particles and the rough shape (height a...
A spontaneous symmetry lifting model based on Tlusty’s elegant topological deconstruction suggests that multiple punctuated ecosystem resilience regime changes in metabolic free energy that were broadly similar to the aerobic transition enabled a punctuated sequence of increasingly complex genetic codes and protein translators. In a manner similar to the Serial Endosymbiosis effecting the Eukar...
