The rhodium(I)-catalysed arylative annulation of 1,4-enynes with arylboronic acids was investigated. The reaction was found to proceed via an addition-1,4-rhodium migration-addition sequence, affording the corresponding 1,1-disubstituted 3-(arylmethylene)indanes.

A series of 2-substituted 3-(toluenesulfonamidoalkyl)indoles was synthesized by application of (EtO)(2)POH or iodine as the catalyst, and was hydrogenated using chiral Pd catalyst, giving the 2,3-disubstituted indolines with up to 97% ee.

The copper(II)-mediated oxidative cyclization of enamides to oxazoles is reported. A range of 2,5-disubstituted oxazoles were prepared in moderate to good yields in two steps from simple amide and alkyne precursors.

A number of new disubstituted 2,5-thiazolidinone derivatives were synthesized and tested for their antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative), and Streptomyces species (Actinomycetes). Cp*RuCl(PPh3)2 is an effective catalyst for the regioselective "fusion" of organic azides and terminal alkynes, producing 1,5-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles. Internal alkynes also participate in this catalysis, resulting in fully substituted 1,2,3-triazoles.
