Recessive deleterious mutations are common, causing many genetic disorders in humans and producing inbreeding depression in the majority of sexually reproducing diploids. The abundance of recessive deleterious mutations in natural populations suggests they are likely to be present on a chromosome when a new adaptive mutation occurs, yet the dynamics of recessive deleterious hitchhikers and thei...
The consequences of variable rates of clonal reproduction on the population genetics of neutral markers are explored in diploid organisms within a subdivided population (island model). We use both analytical and stochastic simulation approaches. High rates of clonal reproduction will positively affect heterozygosity. As a consequence, nearly twice as many alleles per locus can be maintained and...
Regulatory networks have evolved to allow gene expression to rapidly track changes in the environment as well as to buffer perturbations and maintain cellular homeostasis in the absence of change. Theoretical work and empirical investigation in Escherichia coli have shown that negative autoregulation confers both rapid response times and reduced intrinsic noise, which is reflected in the fact t...
Abstract The expected apportionment of genetic diversity in diploid clonal organisms structured in numerous subpopulations is explored. Under the specific assumptions considered, corresponding, for instance, to clonal pathogens infecting a large number of hosts, the co-ancestry between individuals within subpopulations is the only nontrivial quantity. Thus the population structure can be fully ...
The effect of the gene dosage on the expression of rRNAs was studied in Hypericum perforatum. The methylation levels of rDNA were analysed using the isoschizomers MspI and HpaII and eleven additional methylation-sensitive enzymes. No differences in rDNA methylation were observed between diploids and tetraploids at an early ontogenetic stage.
A small-scale functional analysis screen has revealed several new phenotypes associated with a large deletion of GDH3, one of two Saccharomyces cerevisiae genes known to encode NADP-linked glutamate dehydrogenase. Diploids heterozygous for the deletion are able to sporulate in rich media, while haploid deletants produce dark, wrinkled colonies containing pseudohyphal cells. The haploid cells ra...
ANALYSIS of all types of mitotic segregants from diploids of Aspergillus nidulans with non-selective methods has shown that among conidia aneuploids resulting from mitotic nondisjunction occur with a relatively high frequency of 1-2% (GFER 1961). It seemed interesting to find out whether meiotic nondisjunction is also frequent in this species. In haploid organisms the only products of meiotic n...
Knowledge of rangewide variation in DNA content and ploidy level may be valuable in understanding the evolutionary history of a species. Recent studies of Acacia senegal report diploids and occasional tetraploids in the Sudano-Sahelian region of sub-Saharan Africa, but nothing is known about the overall extent of DNA ploidy variation within the species. In this study, we determine the DNA conte...
Phenotypic plasticity may allow organisms to cope with altered environmental conditions as e.g. after the introduction into a new range. In particular polyploid organisms, containing more than two sets of chromosomes, may show high levels of plasticity, which could in turn increase their environmental tolerance and invasiveness. Here, we studied the role of phenotypic plasticity in the invasion...
