UNLABELLED Learning fine motor skills is a pre-requisite for succeeding in dental practice and it is sometimes challenging for dental students. Most of the methods used in the selection process depend on evaluation of intellectual ability or structured interview while manual competence is not. However, no test on aptitude or manual dexterity is used as criteria. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the p...
OBJECTIVE To compare the performance and postoperative sensitivity of a posterior resin composite with that of bonded amalgam in 40 (n = 20) large sized cavities and to evaluate whether resin composite could be an alternative for bonded amalgam. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a randomized clinical trial. Twenty patients in need of at least two posterior restorations were recruited. Authors ra...
The possibility for the clinical application of an experimental restorative material, which is composed of an Ag-Sn-Cu-Pd spherical alloy and a Ga-In-Sn-Ag alloy, was examined by observing periodic changes during class I restoration. In all of the restorations tested, the surface texture and the marginal integrity had deteriorated after a period of one year. Therefore, it was concluded that thi...
A joint CDA-Institutes of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis study was undertaken to evaluate the dental research priorities of Canadian dentists. A self-complete questionnaire was sent to all dentists in Canada with the December 2001 JCDA. This last article in a 3-part series presents the results on funding priorities. By April 1, 2002, 2,788 questionnaires, representing a response rate of a...
A computerized dental model was used to study the stress induced in a Class 1 amalgam restoration when supported by bases of varying materials and thickness. Under the same load, the maximum tensile stresses and deflections in the amalgam restoration increased at least threefold with a zinc oxide-eugenol base as compared with a ZnPO4 cement base.
We have synthesized a new Cu amalgam, the Cu-rich phase Cu3Hg. It crystallizes with the Ni3Sn structure type with a hexagonal unit cell (space group P63/mmc , a = 5.408(4) Å, c = 4.390(3) Å) and shows some mixed occupancy of Cu on the Hg site, resulting in a refined composition of Cu3.11Hg0.89. This is the first example of an amalgam with the Ni3Sn structure type where Hg is located mainly on t...
BACKGROUND Dental amalgam is a source of elemental and inorganic mercury. The safety of dental amalgam in individuals remains a controversial issue. Urinary mercury concentrations are used to assess chronic exposure to elemental mercury. At present, there are no indications of mercury-associated adverse effects at levels below 5 μg Hg/g creatinine (Cr) or 7 μg Hg/L (urine). The purpose of the p...
The modulus of elasticity of dental amalgam has been determined by analysis of creep data (OGLESBY ET AL, J Res Natl Bur Stan 72C: 203, 1968) and by ultrasonic methods (DICKSON and OGLESBY, J Dent Res 46: 1475, 1967; HALL ET AL, J Dent Res 52: 390, 1973) to be between 63,000 and 70,000 MN/m2. These values represent the instantaneous elastic compliance term when dental amalgam is treated as a vi...
According to a recent American Dental Association survey, posterior composite resin restorations now outnumber amalgam restorations in the United States. Dental schools around the world vary considerably in the extent to which they teach the use of composite resins. We aimed to determine if there has been an increase in the placement of posterior composite restorations in an Israeli dental scho...
