Iptables is a well known Linux’s user interface to control the Netfiltermodule, which is responsible for processing packets traversing the Linux’s networking subsystem. In cooperation with the conntrackmodule, Netfilter supports a wide range of network functions such as: filtering, NAT, stateful firewall, load balancer, anomaly detection, etc. Given the central role of the iptables’ functions i...

The state-of-the-art OpenFlow technology only partially realized SDN vision of abstraction and centralization for packet forwarding in switches. OpenFlow/P4 falls short in implementing middlebox functionalities due to the fundamental limitation in its match-action abstraction. In this paper, we advocate the vision of Software-Defined Middleboxes (SDM) to realize abstraction and centralization f...

In this paper, we posit that extension of SDN to support deeply and flexibly programmable, software-defined data plane significantly enhance SDN and NFV and their interaction in terms of (1) enhanced interaction between applications and networks, (2) optimization of network functions, and (3) rapid development of new network protocols. All of these benefits are expected to contribute to improvi...

This document describes the terminology for benchmarking link-state Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) route convergence. The terminology is to be used for benchmarking IGP convergence time through externally observable (black-box) data-plane measurements. The terminology can be applied to any link-state IGP, such as IS-IS and OSPF. Status of This Memo This document is not an Internet Standards Tr...

The rising demand for high-quality online services requires reliable packet delivery at the network layer. Data-plane fault localization is recognized as a promising means to this end, since it enables a source node to efficiently localize faulty links, find a fault-free path, and enforce contractual obligations among network nodes. Existing fault localization protocols cannot achieve a practic...

With the decoupling of network control and data planes, the upcoming Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm advocates better network control and manageability. It introduces logical centralized control, network programmability and abstraction of underlying infrastructure from network services and applications. With global visibility of network state and central control that eases real time ...

Formulas for variances of plane parameters fitted with Nonlinear Least Squares to point clouds acquired by 3D imaging systems (e.g., LADAR) are derived. Two different error objective functions used in minimization are discussed: the orthogonal and the directional functions. Comparisons of corresponding formulas suggest the two functions can yield different results when applied to the same dataset.

Recent technological advances provide an excellent opportunity to achieve truly effective results in the field of open Internet devices, also known as Open Routers or ORs. Even though some initiatives have been undertaken over the last few years to investigate ORs and related topics, other extensive areas still require additional investigation. In this contribution we report the results of the ...

Model fitting refers to problem that computing the most ideal parameters of a model so that the model gives the greatest extent of coincidence with the data. The most widely used method for fitting data with Gaussian noises should be ordinary least squares. However, the ordinary least squares method treats each datum equally, which makes it unsuitable for fitting the data containing outliers. T...
