We demonstrate theoretically the existence of one-way electromagnetic modes in a waveguide formed between a semi-infinite photonic crystal structure and a semi-infinite metal region under a static magnetic field. Such a waveguide provides a frequency range where only one propagating direction is allowed. In this frequency range, disorder-induced scattering is completely suppressed. Such a waveg...

We introduce a method for designing an H1 photonic crystal cavity to enhance its quality factor (Q factor). The highest theoretical Q factor of 120,000 is obtained. The Fourier transformation of field distribution shows that the enhancement arises from the component reduction of a leaky mode. The Q-factor improvement has also been demonstrated experimentally with the highest value of 11,700. Ou...

An asymmetric mechanism for correlated motion occurring in noninteracting pairs of adjacent orthogonal 1,4-bis(carboxyethynyl)bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) rotators 1 in the solid state is unraveled and shown to play an important role in understanding the dynamics in the crystalline rotor, Bu4N+[1-]·H2O. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and calculation of rotor-rotor interaction energies combined...

The electric quadrupole interaction of Ir sI 1; T1y2 41.5 hd in a Fe single crystal was measured for magnetization parallel to the crystallographic [100], [110], and [111] axes. Contrary to all previous experiments, a strong dependence of the electric field gradient on the direction of the magnetization with respect to the crystallographic axes was observed for the first time. [S0031-9007(9...

We discuss techniques to tune and shape the long-range part of the interaction potentials in quantum gases of bosonic polar molecules by dressing rotational excitations with static and microwave fields. This provides a novel tool towards engineering strongly correlated quantum phases in combination with low-dimensional trapping geometries. As an illustration, we discuss the 2D superfluid-crysta...

We present an analytically solvable model of P colinear, two-dimensional quantum dots, each containing two electrons. Inter-dot coupling via the electron-electron interaction gives rise to sets of entangled ground states. These ground states have crystal-like inter-plane correlations and arise dis-continously with increasing magnetic field. Their ranges and stabilities are found to depend on do...

We investigate the behavior of impurity fields immersed in a larger condensate field in various dimensions. We discuss the localization of a single impurity field within a condensate and note the effects of surface energy. We derive the functional form of the attractive condensate-mediated interaction between two impurities. Generalizing the analysis to N impurity fields, we show that within va...

We find a dramatic enhancement of electron propagation along a narrow range of real-space angles from an isotropic source in a two-dimensional quantum well made from a zinc-blende semiconductor. This "electron-beam" formation is caused by the interplay between spin-orbit interaction originating from a perpendicular electric field to the quantum well and the intrinsic spin-orbit field of the zin...

Pure and Ni2þ doped KZnF3 single crystals were studied using the combination of the DFT-based ab initio methods, crystal field theory and experimental spectroscopic techniques. The electronic, optical and elastic properties have been calculated and compared with available experimental data and good agreement was achieved. Elastic anisotropy of pure KZnF3 was modeled; calculations of the sound v...
