BACKGROUND Elevated exposure to the essential element manganese (Mn) can be toxic. Manganese concentrations in ground water vary considerably, and reported associations between Mn and early-life mortality and impaired development have raised concern. We assessed the effects of drinking water Mn exposure during pregnancy upon fetal and infant survival. METHODS In this population-based cohort s...
At physiological concentrations of HCO3- and CO2, Mn(II) catalyzes disproportionation of H2O2. This catalase-like activity is directly proportional to the concentrations of Mn(II) and H2O2, and it increases exponentially with increases in pH. The effect of increasing pH is almost completely attributable to the concomitant increase in HCO3- concentration. The rate is proportional to the third po...
The current study assesses the effect of fibrous clay minerals’ amendments and arbuscular mycorrhiza incubation on heavy metal uptake and translocation in Eucalyptus grandis and Ailanthus altissima plants. For doing so, Eucalyptus and ailanthus trees have been grown in a soil sample, contaminated with heavy metal iron ore mining and collected from southern Iran. The area under study is arid, wi...
Manganese (Mn) is an essential nutrient but at high exposure levels is a neurotoxicant. There is no well-validated biomarker to assess perinatal Mn exposure. A total of 75 mother-child pairs provided blood, urine, and/or deciduous tooth samples. We analyzed Mn in dentin and enamel of shed teeth; maternal, cord, and child blood; and maternal and child urine and examined the interrelationships of...
The body weight and condition index (CI) effect on concentrations of Pb, Zn, Mn and Fe were investigated in Mytilus galloprovincialis soft tissue at two different locations in the Izmit Bay. A negative correlation between soft tissue dry weight and metal concentrations was clear in Mn and Fe. On the other hand, Zn and Pb levels decreased with increasing CI value.
The concentrations of specific elements in the equine liver and kidneys are of practical relevance since horses are not only food-producing animals, but also partially serve as an indicator for the environmental pollution, as the basic feed includes plants like grass, grain and fruits. In this study, the concentrations of strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), mangan...
The neurological sequelae of chronic Mn exposure include psychiatric, cognitive, and motor deficits, suggesting the potential involvement of multiple neurotransmitter systems and brain regions. Available evidence in rodents suggests that Mn causes dysregulation of glutamatergic and gamma-aminobutyric acidergic (GABAergic) neurotransmitter systems. However, this has never been studied comprehens...
Introduction The paramagnetic properties of divalent manganese cations (Mn) and their in vivo resemblance to calcium cations (Ca) has led to their use in morphological [1] and neural pathway [2] imaging. Mn is taken up through Ca-channels during neural activity and subsequently transported anterograde along microtubules at a velocity equivalent to fast axonal transport thereby making the metal ...
Background and Objective: Measurment of metals concentrations in scalp hair is a well known method for monitoring exposure to heavy metals, assessment of heavy metal poisoning, evaluation of nutrient levels and diagnoses of diseases. The present research was conducted to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals in the scalp hairs of the local fishermen from Shif Island (Bushehr) and assess t...
Barley (Hordeum vulgare) genotypes display a marked difference in their ability to tolerate growth at low manganese (Mn) concentrations, a phenomenon designated as differential Mn efficiency. Induction of Mn deficiency in two genotypes differing in Mn efficiency led to a decline in the quantum yield efficiency for both, although faster in the Mn-inefficient genotype. Leaf tissue and thylakoid M...
