Future embedded systems (ES) will offer higher computation capacity than existing embedded systems. New applications of these ES require more and more memory resources and more and more energetic autonomy. For this reason, limited memory capacity and limited power consumption are two of the most important constraints in these systems. Since many ES are battery powered, reduced power consumption...
In this paper a new hardware method for fast and low power fractal coding is presented. The introduced method is based on binary classification of domain and range blocks. The technique not only reduces power consumption and increases processing speed but also has minimal effect on the degradation of the output result compared to the available fractal techniques. In order to show the functional...
Recent work on the economic effects of minimum wages has stressed that the standard economic model, where increases in minimum wages depress employment, is not supported by empirical work in some labor markets. We present a general theoretical model whereby employers have some degree of monopsony power, which allows minimum wages to have the conventional negative impact on employment but which ...
By providing ubiquitous Internet connectivity, wireless networks offer more convenient ways for users to surf the Internet. However, wireless networks encounter more technological challenges than wired networks, such as bandwidth, security problems, and handoff latency. Thus, this paper proposes new technologies to solve these problems. First, a Security Access Gateway (SAG) is proposed to solv...
In order to improve coding compression and display quality in bitstream playback, an H.264, with an “adaptive transform with variable block” (ATVB), is able to achieve this. However, these added compression and display benefits are offset by the demand for double the computation power requirements. In addition to this computing power increase an extra round of Motion Estimation (ME), when using...
In prefix coding over an infinite alphabet, methods that consider specific distributions generally consider those that decline more quickly than a power law (e.g., Golomb coding). Particular power-law distributions, however, model many random variables encountered in practice. For such random variables, compression performance is judged via estimates of expected bits per input symbol. This corr...
This paper describes a Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA), designed using a 0.25-μm SiGe process, operating in the 4.4– 5 GHz band. A power gain of 12.8 dB at 5 GHz has been achieved with a power consumption of 23.77 mW using a 2 V power supply. The noise figure is 2.2 dB while the input referred 1dB compression point is −6.2 dBm.
Wireless Visual Sensor Network (WVSN) is an emerging field which combines an image sensor, an embedded computational unit, a wireless communication link, memory and energy resource. The individual Visual Sensor Nodes (VSNs) acquire image of the area of interest, perform some local processing on it and transmit the results using an embedded wireless transceiver. The processing of images at the V...
In wireless devices, reducing the time the radio is on results in lower power consumption. In resource-constrained wireless networks, then, sending the same data in fewer bytes can greatly extend the lifetime of the network. In this paper, we explore the use of protocolindependent packet compression, a technique orthogonal to current explicit compaction techniques. Such a compression algorithm ...
In this paper, we introduced a Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) based VLSI-oriented lossy image compression approach, widely used as the core of digital image compression. Here, Distributed Arithmetic (DA) technique is applied to determine the wavelet coefficients, so that the number of arithmetic operation can be reduced substantially. As well, the compression rate is enhanced with the aid of ...
