Gastric acid secretion, pepsin secretion, and fasting serum gastrin levels were measured in 23 patients with duodenal ulcer disease, divided into three groups which received either cimetidine 800 mg daily, cimetidine 1600 mg daily, or ranitidine hydrochloride 300 mg daily for eight weeks. Pentagastrin tests were carried out at intervals both before and after treatment. Each dose of cimetidine r...

Cimetidine is known to cause drug-drug interactions (DDIs) with organic cations in the kidney, and a previous clinical study showed that coadministration of cimetidine or probenecid with fexofenadine (FEX) decreased its renal clearance. FEX was taken up into human kidney by human organic anion transporter (hOAT) 3 (SLC22A8), but the mechanism of its luminal efflux has not been clarified. The pr...

The effect of H2-receptor blockade on intragastric acidity was studied in nine normal males. The pH of their gastric contents was measured at hourly daytime and two hourly nighttime intervals for 48 hours. The subjects ate identical meals, drank identical volumes of fluid, and smoked the same number of cigarettes during the two study days. Their physical activity was unrestricted in a ward envi...

Recently the combined therapy with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and cimetidine has been reported to be effective against advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). IFN-alpha and cimetidine have an antitumor effect partly due to enhancement of cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes against cancer cells. We examined the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens and adhesion molecules on ...

The effectiveness of antacid maintenance therapy in preventing duodenal ulcer (DU) relapse was investigated. Two hundred and fifty one asymptomatic patients with healed DU were stratified into smokers and non-smokers and randomised to receive for one year either placebo, or Maalox TC three tablets (81 mmol) at bedtime (hs), or Maalox TC three tablets in the morning plus three tablets at bedtime...

Background and purpose: Combination therapy in cancer is a promising approach to increase efficacy and tolerability and to decrease adverse effects and drug resistance. Recently, anti-cancer properties of H2-receptor antagonists have been reported in several pre-clinical and clinical studies. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of cimetidine and famotidine H2-blockers on cytotoxicit...

Twenty patients with reflux oesophagitis causing a tight peptic oesophageal stricture entered a randomised double-blind crossover trial in which they received cimetidine, 1.6 g daily, and matching placebo each for six months. The gross endoscopic appearances of oesophagitis, though not the grades of histopathological changes, showed significant improvement during treatment with cimetidine. The ...

Patients taking anti-inflammatory drugs for arthritis are prone to dyspepsia, and management of peptic ulcer is difficult because surgery is poorly tolerated. In this open study cimetidine treatment was associated with ulcer healing in 17 out of 21 patients with arthritis even when anti-inflammatory treatment was continued. Remission was maintained for 1 year by continued cimetidine therapy.

The antiulcer activity of an aqueous extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii was studied in rats and was compared with that of cimetidine. Ulcers were induced in rats by means of various experimental models: aspirin, indomethacin, serotonin and reserpine. The extract was found to have significant antiulcer activity against all the models studied. Cimetidine was found to be ineffective against serotoni...

BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common problem and its most common etiology is peptic ulcer disease. Ulcer rebleeding is considered a perilous complication for patients. To reduce the rate of rebleeding and to fasten the improvement of patients' general conditions, most emergency departments in Iran use H2-blockers before endoscopic procedures (i.e. intravenous omeprazole is not avail...
