Genital Chlamydia trachomatis infections in women typically are asymptomatic and do not cause permanent upper genital tract (UGT) damage. Consistent with this presentation, type 2 innate and TH2 adaptive immune responses associated with dampened inflammation and tissue repair are elicited in the UGT of Chlamydia-infected women. Primary C. trachomatis infection of mice also causes no genital pat...

21 There is a lack of a common concept on how to estimate transmissibility of 22 Chlamydia trachomatis from cross-sectional sexual partnership studies. Using a 23 mathematical model that takes into account the dynamics of chlamydia transmis24 sion and sexual partnership formation, we report refined estimates of chlamydia 25 transmissibility in heterosexual partnerships. 26

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) were enrolled in an anorectal Chlamydia trachomatis screening study. Anorectal Chlamydia DNA was detected in 16 (10.9%) of 147 men, mainly among asymptomatic patients and patients having >20 sexual partners. These results support routine anorectal Chlamydia screening in HIV-infected MSM who report unprotected anal inter...

By using a reason-for-test code, we compared positivity for female chlamydia and gonorrhea. At family planning clinics, there were no statistically significant differences in screening versus diagnostic positivity for either chlamydia or gonorrhea among women. However, at adolescent health clinics, diagnostic positivity was higher than screening positivity for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

A novel serological test, IPAzyme Chlamydia (Savyon Diagnostics Ltd., Beer Sheva, Israel), was compared with an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the ability to detect serum immunoglobulin G and A antibodies in the diagnosis of acute chiamydial pelvic inflammatory disease. In comparison with cell culture, which is the "gold standard," IPAzyme Chlamydia and EIA exhibited sensitivities of 63 and 68% a...

Among the many theories of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis has been a possible role for infection. However, the possibility that a viral infection initiates or perpetuates damage to the arterial wall has received less attention than other more widely recognized risk factors. Recently, a newly described Chlamydia species, Chlamydia pneumoniae, strain TWAR,' has been associated with atheroscl...

Further research is necessary to elucidate the pathogenesis of chlamydial PID. It is hoped that these endeavours will eventually lead to a vaccine to prevent not only chlamydia infection, but also chlamydia associated infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. In the meantime we need to develop strategies to prevent primary and secondary chlamydia infection and its sequelae. Recen...
