In the last decade, the market for non-volatile computer storage has experienced rapid growth. However, as the device size scales down, currently used NOR and NAND technology is facing limitations from tunnel oxide and electrostatic interactions between cells (Lacaita & Wouters, 2008). To solve the scaling problems, in the last fifteen years, a number of alternative Flash memory technologies ha...

Group-velocity dispersion of birefringent GeAsSe tapered PCF is directly measured over 1900-2300nm range using all-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We experimentally prove that zero-dispersion wavelength of chalcogenide PCFs can be shifted to thulium/holmium doped silica emission band. We have synthesized a series of chalcogenide glasses from the As-S-Se system that is designed to have strong nonlinearities. Measurements reveal that many of these glasses offer optical Kerr nonlinearities greater than 400 times that of fused silica at 1.25 and 1.55mum and figures of merit for all-optical switching greater than 5 at 1.55mum .

A novel method combining elemental sulfur and selenium was developed, yielding crystalline sulfur-selenium compounds. The compounds were melted, and an organic comonomer added. Once the organic comonomer was consumed, the viscous compound was vitrified and allowed to cool yielding organic-inorganic hybrid polymers that are termed Organically Modified Chalcogenide (ORMOCHALC) polymers.

The distributed Brillouin gain profile of an ultrathin optical microwire made of chalcogenide-glass is characterized using a phase-modulated correlation-domain measurement technique. Method resolves variations of uniformity below 5% along a 13 cm-long microwire. OCIS codes: (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin, (060.2270) Fiber characterization

Silver sulfide nanocrystals and chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) are two distinct classes of semiconductor materials that have been exploited for new infrared technologies. Each one exhibits particular optoelectronic phenomena, which could be encompassed in a hybrid material. However, the integration of uniformly distributed crystalline phases within an amorphous matrix is not always an easy task. I...
