We have fabricated highly efficient CdS/CdSe quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) featuring low-cost cobalt sulfide (CoS) counter electrodes. Under 100 mW cm(-2) irradiation, the CdS/CdSe QDSSC featuring a CoS electrode provided an energy conversion efficiency as high as 3.4%.
Redox couples based on cobalt complexes were found to be effective in regenerating both inorganic CdSe quantum dot- and organic dye-sensitizers. The hybrid sensitizer composed of CdSe QD and ruthenium sensitizer (Z907Na) dye showed a maximum power conversion efficiency of 4.76% on using cobalt(o-phen)(3)(2+/3+) as a common redox mediator.
Pt-tipped CdSe nanorods epitaxially passivated with atomic-level CdS shells have been synthesized and have significantly improved the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency by 6.5 times. The enhancement is due to the effective elimination of surface defects/trap states in the CdSe nanorods, thereby minimizing exciton recombination and maximizing the charge separation efficiency.
