The "in vitro" antifungal activity of ozonized sunflower oil (Bioperoxoil®) was tested on 101 samples of yeasts originating from onychomycosis using the disk diffusion method. The oil was efficacious against several clinical fungal strains: Candida parapsilosis, Candida albicans, Trichosporon asahii, Candida tropicalis and Candida guilliermondii.

Two new cryptic sister species, Candida orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis, were recently identified by consistent DNA sequence differences among several genes within the genetically heterogeneous Candida parapsilosis complex. Here, we present data demonstrating that Pyrosequencing analysis of 20 nucleotides of internal transcribed spacer region 2 rapidly and robustly distinguishes between ...

OBJECTIVES To identify the frequency of caspofungin-non-susceptible Candida isolates in cancer patients with candidiasis. METHODS We reviewed the in vitro susceptibilities (M27-A3 CLSI method) of 650 Candida spp. associated with invasive candidiasis episodes in 582 hospitalized cancer patients (2005-08). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS We identified seven caspofungin-non-susceptible Candida strains...

CHROMagar Candida medium is used for the isolation and identification of Candida species, but it does not differentiate Candida albicans from Candida dubliniensis. This differentiation can be achieved by using Pal's agar, which cannot be used in primary isolation. We have combined both media to obtain a new medium that can be used for the isolation and identification of C. dubliniensis in prima...

OBJECTIVES A new series of naphthyl substituted indazolonols 15-21 were synthesized and characterized by their melting point, elemental analysis, MS, FT-IR, one-dimensional 1H, D2O exchanged 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic data. METHODS All the synthesized compounds 15-21 were tested for their in vitro antifungal activities against Candida sp. namely Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida t...

Susceptibilities to amphotericin B and fluconazole of 964 Candida isolates collected in Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance of Yeasts in 2006 were determined. There were 419 (43.5%) Candida albicans, 246 (25.5%) Candida tropicalis, 211 (21.9%) Candida glabrata, 62 (6.4%) Candida parapsilosis, 14 (1.5%) Candida krusei, and 12 (1.2%) others. Interestingly, 16 of the 17 amphotericin B-...

Activities and properties of the ammonium assimilation enzymes NADP+-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), glutamate synthase (GOGAT) and glutamine synthetase (GS) were determined in batch and continuous cultures of Candida albicans. NADP+-dependent GDH activity showed allosteric kinetics, with an S0.5 for 2-oxoglutarate of 7.5 mM and an apparent Km for ammonium of 5.0 mM. GOGAT activity was...

This study was conducted to determine the proteinase, phospholipase, and biofilm forming abilities of Candida isolates in blood cultures of specimens from patients at the University Malaya Medical Center, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Proteinase and phospholipase activities were detected in 93.7% and 73.3%, respectively, of 15 Candida albicans isolates. Amongst the 26 non-C. albicans Candida isolates...

BACKGROUND The frequency of Candida isolates as a cause of hospital infections has risen in recent years, leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality. The knowledge of the epidemiology of those hospital acquired fungal infections is essential to implement an adequate antifungal therapy. AIMS To describe the epidemiology of Candida infections in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) from a surveill...

In vitro pharmacodynamic model (PDM) simulation of serum antifungal concentrations may predict the value of combination antifungal regimens against Candida sp. endocarditis. We investigated the effects of combinations of flucytosine (5FC), micafungin (Mica), and voriconazole (Vor) against Candida-infected human platelet-fibrin clots, used as simulated endocardial vegetations (SEVs). Single clin...
