The synchronous presentation of pulmonary and hepatic nodules in a patient with previously resected bronchogenic carcinoma raises suspicion of recurrence and mandates restaging. We present the case of a 71-year-old male with a history of lobectomy with pericardial resection and mediastinal lymphadenectomy (T3N0M0). At five years after the operation, he presented with a new pulmonary lesion. Res...
A kidney metastasis from a squamous bronchogenic carcinoma is described that showed the unusual feature of occupying Bowman's capsule as well as metastasizing interstitially, producing a neoplastic ;crescent' formation. The lesion is compared with the histological picture of subacute glomerulonephritis. No explanation is offered for this route for metastasis.
Inspiratory muscle function was assessed in a patient with the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome that developed in association with a bronchogenic carcinoma. Repetitive maximal inspiratory pressure measurements and the electromyographic response to phrenic nerve stimulation established involvement of the inspiratory muscles in general and the diaphragm specifically in this condition.
A 67 year old man with severe coronary artery disease was found to have a resectable bronchogenic carcinoma. Myocardial revascularisation and lung resection were considered to be unduly hazardous as either separate or combined operations. Preoperative laser therapy, however, enabled the two procedures to be performed in greater safety in the most appropriate sequence.
