Postures are often described and modeled using angles between body segments rather than joint coordinates. Models can be used to predict these angles as a function of anthropometry and postural requirements. Postural representation, however, requires the joint coordinates. The use of conventional forward kinematics to derive joint coordinates from predicted angles may violate task constraints, ...

Remote monitoring service for elderly persons is important as the aged populations in most developed countries continue growing. To monitor the safety and health of the elderly population, we propose a novel omni-directional vision sensor based system, which can detect and track object motion, recognize human posture, and analyze human behavior automatically. In this work, we have made the foll...

Center of pressure (COP) trajectories summarize the complex mechanical interaction between the foot and a contacted surface. Each trajectory itself is also complex, comprising hundreds of instantaneous vectors over the duration of stance phase. To simplify statistical analysis often a small number of scalars are extracted from each COP trajectory. The purpose of this paper was to demonstrate ho...

Female cowbirds raised in auditory isolated from males responded to the songs of male cowbirds with copulatory postures. The songs of males reared in isolated were more effective in eliciting the posture than the songs of normally reared males. The females did not respond to the songs of other species. These results indicate one mechanism of species identification for this parasitic species.

Alongside spoken communication human conversation has a non-verbal component that conveys complex and subtle emotional and interpersonal information. This information is conveyed largely bodily with postures, gestures and facial expression. In order to capture the Kansei aspects of human interaction within a virtual environment, it is therefore vital to model this bodily interaction. This type ...

A central problem in motor control relates to the coordination of the arm's many degrees of freedom. This problem concerns the many arm postures (kinematics) that correspond to the same hand position in space and the movement trajectories between begin and end position (dynamics) that result in the same arm postures. The aim of this study was to compare the predictions for arm kinematics by var...

It generally is known that vibration of various muscles in free-standing subjects evokes a spatially oriented postural response. Furthermore, it recently has been shown that when a vibratory stimulus is terminated, a powerful involuntary contraction of the previously vibrated muscle often occurs that, under the isotonic condition, is accompanied by movement of a limb. The aim of this study was ...
