BACKGROUND Retransfusion of the patient's own blood during surgery is used to reduce the need for allogenic blood transfusion. It has however been found that this blood contains lipid particles, which form emboli in different organs if the blood is retransfused on the arterial side. In this study, we tested whether retransfusion of blood containing lipid micro-particles on the venous side in a ...

The article shows the antioxidant properties of new derivatives 2-aminothiazole containing diterpene fragment. Using method luminol-dependent chemiluminescent analysis it is revealed that tested compounds under investigation exhibit in model test systems, where processes reactive oxygen species formation, lipid peroxidation, and cell phagocytosis blood are induced.

1. Although not often appreciated, it is a fact that molecular oxygen is more soluble in lipids than in aqueous solution. We have recently developed a method to monitor oxygen within the lipid content of plasma. Monitoring plasma oxygen is one essential element during open heart surgery using a cardiopulmonary bypass pump and oxygenator. Currently oxygen is monitored electrochemically and is ba...

Korean raspberry, Rubus coreanus Miquel (RCM), contains high concentrations of phenolic compounds, which prevent oxidative stress. To determine the effect of RCM on antioxidant capacity in humans, we assessed in vivo lipid oxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities from plasma in 15 healthy men. The subjects ingested 30 g of freeze-dried RCM daily for 4 weeks. Blood was taken at baseline and a...

conclusions this study supports the assumption that low glycemic index diet as well as metformin can positively affect metabolic syndrome components. background metabolic syndrome (mets) continues to be highly prevalent and contributes to a rapidly growing problem worldwide. the most important therapeutic intervention for metabolic syndrome is diet modification, an intervention whose efficacy h...

Extended Abstract 1.Introduction According to the World Health Organization (2010), cardiovascular disease (CHD) is the most common cause of death worldwide (1). Sadeghpour et al. (2010) have shown that one of the most common problems after coronary artery bypass grafting is extensive hemodynamic changes. Incomplete drainage of blood and blood fluid from the pericardium and pleura reduces hea...

Blood is a commonly used biofluid for biomarker discovery. Although blood lipid metabolites are considered to be potential biomarker candidates, their fundamental properties are not well characterized. We aimed to (1) investigate the matrix type (serum vs. plasma) that may be preferable for lipid biomarker exploration, (2) elucidate age- and gender-associated differences in lipid metabolite lev...

Considering drug-induced lipid peroxidation as a possible mediator of drug-induced toxicity and exploiting the free radical scavenging action of antioxidants, the present study was designed to evaluate the antiperoxidative potential of morin on cyclophosphamide/flutamide-induced lipid peroxidation and also to evaluate the effect of morin on cyclophosphamide/flutamide-induced changes in choleste...

BACKGROUND Many severe diseases are caused by defects in lipid metabolism. As a result, patients often accumulate unusual lipids in their blood and tissues, and proper identification of these lipids is essential for correct diagnosis. In this study, we investigated the potential use of proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy to simultaneously identify and quantify (un)usual lipi...
