The detonation of sporting ammunition requires a guaranteed method of igniting a small quantity of percussion sensitive mix contained in a metal chamber known as a cap. This is struck externally by the firing pin. Mercury fulminate, used originally, is highly toxic and unstable. Manufacturers in modern times have therefore based the ignition mixture on the lead salt of trinitro resorcinol (styp...

Prion diseases are associated with the conversion of cellular prion protein, PrPC, into a misfolded oligomeric form, PrPSc. Previous studies indicate that salts promote conformational conversion of the recombinant prion protein into a PrPSc-like form. To gain insight into the mechanism of this effect, here we have studied the influence of a number of salts (sodium sulfate, sodium fluoride, sodi...

The one pot reaction of glyoxal and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in aqueous sodium hydroxide was found to be a safe and inexpensive method for the preparation of diaminoglyoxime. By increasing stoichiometric ratio of the hydroxylamine hydrochloride and decreasing the solvent volume, the product yield increased considerably (~ 70%).

• The discovery of the first crown ether is described. Forty-seven other aromatic and saturated polyethers were synthesized and their properties determined. Many form stable crystalline complexes with alkali and alkaline earth salts. Some saturated crown ethers solubilize potassium hydroxide and permanganate in aromatic hydrocarbons, EThe SC!5 indicates that this paper has been cited in over 1,...

This study aims to investigate the activating effect of Na2CO3 and NaOH on the workability and mechanic strength of slag-based alkali activated materials with different alkali contents and water to binder ratios. The heat release during the reaction process of slag activated with sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide were monitored respectively to analyze the hydration process. Meanwhile, the w...

Some factors influencing the separation and detection of amino acids by high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with integrated pulsed amperometric detection were investigated. These factors include eluent concentration, column temperature, and detection waveform. The selectivity changes in weakly retained amino acids are slight with changing sodium hydroxide eluent concentration. When s...

The present work describes the preparation of chromium substituted magnetoplumbite ferrites from nitrate salts, and the effect of Cr on its structural and magnetic properties. Powders with nominal composition PbFeiz,Cr,O,, (1.0 < x S 6.0) were obtained by thermal decomposition at 920 "C of coprecipitated hydroxide-carbonate mixed salts. A complete substitution of Fe3* by cr3' was found and the ...

Hydrogen sulfide, which is produced by sewer biofilms as a result of sulfate reduction under anaerobic conditions, has since long been identified as a major cause of corrosion and odour problems in a sewer system. Dosing of various types of chemicals to wastewater is widely used by the water industry as a control measure for these problems. Oxygen/air, nitrate salts, iron salts and magnesium hy...
