Myasthenia gravis is an organ-specific autoimmune disease characterized by the production of anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies. In this review, I describe the pathophysiological importance of the altered chemokine receptor-mediated signaling in the thymus and peripheral blood of myasthenia gravis patients. The epidemiological and clinical features of myasthenia gravis are also discussed.

Background: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a successful treatment option for various psychiatric disorders. It is performed under general anesthesia where succinylcholine is the preferred muscle relaxant in this process. However its several contraindications and potential adverse effects, and the fact that it is not always available should be considered. Therefore, finding an effective and ...

A close association of autoimmune diseases or autoimmune phenomena in myasthenia gravis is well known. A comprehensive immunological study of 22 patients with myasthenia gravis showed that changes in the immune system mainly involve the thymus-derived lymphocytes (T cells). Anti-thymus antibody was present in 90% of the patients, and it paralleled the frequency of thymic abnormality in myasthen...

We report a rare case of myasthenia gravis accompanied by multi-focal tuberculosis. A 47-year-old female suffering from myasthenia gravis underwent thymectomy, however, the incision of operation did not heal for many months. Eight months after surgery, she developed fever and gradual loss of consciousness. Laboratory evaluations were suggestive of tuberculous meningitis and multiple parench...

In 17 healthy patients undergoing O2.N2O.isoflurane anaesthesia, following atracurium or vecuronium administration, we compared simultaneous integrated evoked electromyograms (IEEMGs) during spontaneous recovery of the adductor digiti minimi (ADM) and orbicularis oris (OOM) muscle groups in response to train-of-four (TOF) stimulation of the ulnar and facial nerves, respectively. In all patients...

We examined the effects of laudanosine, one of the principal metabolites of atracurium, on the electroencephalogram (EEG) in an animal model of induced epilepsy. Fourteen rabbits were anaesthetized with 4% halothane in oxygen, the trachea intubated and the lungs ventilated mechanically with 30% oxygen and 1% halothane in nitrogen. Animals were assigned randomly to receive either an infusion of ...
