Dismemberment of the preglacial Teays Valley system and development of the present Ohio River valley began in late Tertiary or early Pleistocene. By Illinoian time the present Ohio River was largely established in its present course, except for its headwaters above mile 114, which still flowed northward. The Illinoian glacial advance into northwestern Pennsylvania caused diversion of this porti...

The Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia has been collaborating with Utah Valley University creating “online videoconferences” held in both universities This project was intended to promote autonomous learning and to improve videoconference’ structure, helping students with their foreign language competences. Every participant must assess their own Teaching Perspective and Learning Sty...

Breaking space-time symmetries in two-dimensional crystals can markedly influence their macroscopic electronic properties. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are prime examples where the intrinsically broken crystal inversion symmetry permits the generation of valley-selective electron populations, even though the two valleys are energetically degenerate, locked by time-reversal ...

[1] Fluvial erosion on early Mars was dominated by valley networks created through a combination of groundwater processes and surface runoff. A reduced greenhouse effect due to CO2 loss, together with a declining geothermal heat flux, promoted the growth of a cryosphere and a Hesperian hydrologic regime dominated by outflow channel formation. We test the hypothesis that the transition from vall...

We map polygonally patterned ground formed in sublimation tills that overlie debris-covered glaciers in Mullins Valley and central Beacon Valley, in southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, and distinguish five morphological zones. Where the Mullins Valley debris-covered glacier debouches into Beacon Valley, polygonal patterning transitions from radial (orthogonal) intersections to non-oriented (hex...

Biological traits result in part from interactions between different genetic loci. This can lead to sign epistasis, in which a beneficial adaptation involves a combination of individually deleterious or neutral mutations; in this case, a population must cross a "fitness valley" to adapt. Recombination can assist this process by combining mutations from different individuals or retard it by brea...

Valleytronics is rapidly emerging as an exciting area of basic and applied research. In two-dimensional systems, valley polarization can dramatically modify physical properties through electron-electron interactions as demonstrated by such phenomena as the fractional quantum Hall effect and the metal-insulator transition. Here, we address the electrons' spin alignment in a magnetic field in sil...

Intrinsic valley polarization can be obtained in VSe2 monolayers with broken inversion symmetry and time reversal symmetry. First-principles investigations reveal that the magnitude of the valley splitting in magnetic VSe2 induced by spin-orbit coupling reaches as high as 78.2 meV and can be linearly tuned by biaxial strain. Besides conventional polarized light, hole doping or illumination with...

We examine energy spectra of Si quantum dots embedded in Si0.75Ge0.25 buffers using atomistic numerical calculations for dimensions relevant to qubit implementations. The valley degeneracy of the lowest orbital state is lifted and valley splitting fluctuates with monolayer frequency as a function of the dot thickness. For dot thicknesses 6 nm, valley splitting is found to be 150 eV. Using the u...
