Around the world, there are thousands of people who lost a hand during war or as a consequence of an accident. Artificial hand prosthesis controlled by surface electromyography (EMG) signals offers a promising solution to improve the quality of life of amputees. As part of the process of prosthesis fitting, an occupational therapist will try to train the amputee with the help of a physical pros...

Although the amputee and his remaining limb present many interesting and challenging problems, no detailed study exists of the progression of vascular changes in the remaining limb of the amputee . Goldner (1) in 1960 stated that the second leg of the unilateral diabetic amputee shares the fate of the first rather often and relatively soon . A somewhat similar fate can be assumed for the patien...

Phantom limb pain in amputee patients is not well defined in the literature. Also there is still no clear information on the definition and treatment of phantom radicular pain, in which amputee patients also have radicular pain. This phenomenon, called phantom radiculitis or phantom radiculopathy, has been described in a limited number of cases. If a pathological condition to cause radicular pa...

We provide a summary of professionals’ opinions on the most important factors in the successful use of an upper-limb prosthesis. This summary allows designers and researchers to ensure they are pursuing the most needed areas of improvement and allows patients and professionals to compare their opinions. Comfort, specifically socket-interface comfort, was considered most important for a unilater...

The goal of this study was to gather the opinions of prosthetics experts on the most important factors for the successful use of upper-limb (UL) prostheses, compare them with those of prosthesis users, and ultimately direct research efforts in this field. UL prosthetics experts were asked to compare the importance of the comfort, function, and cosmesis of a prosthetic device for a transhumeral ...

It is well known that the population is ageing not only in this country, but also in many other countries. Morbidity is greater among the older than among the younger members of the population, and there is therefore a high and increasing incidence of those degenerative conditions which result in amputation of a limb or part of a limb. Amputations which may be of the upper or one or both of the...

Gait patterns for the non-amputated leg of eight elderly men with trans-tibial amputations were assessed using kinematic and kinetic measures. Kinematically, the subject's walking speed was faster than expected but less than normative non-amputee data. The stride length was also less than non-amputee norms. Net joint moment and power analyses showed various discrepancies between the amputee sub...

This paper analyses the performances of lower-limb amputees in the 100, 200 and 400 m running events from the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games. In this paper, four hypotheses are pursued. In the first, it investigates whether the running performance of lower-limb amputees over three consecutive Paralympic Games has changed. In the second, it asks whether a bi-lateral amputee has a competiti...
