Oxygen minimum zones are major sites of fixed nitrogen loss in the ocean. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of anaerobic ammonium oxidation, anammox, in pelagic nitrogen removal. Sources of ammonium for the anammox reaction, however, remain controversial, as heterotrophic denitrification and alternative anaerobic pathways of organic matter remineralization cannot account for the am...

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a promising new process to treat high-strength nitrogenous wastewater. Due to the low growth rate of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria, efficient biomass retention is essential for reactor operation. Therefore, we studied the settling ability and community composition of the anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing granules, which were cultivated in an upflow a...

The direct oxidative synthesis of α-ketoamides via anodic oxidation was developed by using dioxygen as a reactant under mild conditions. This methodology has a broad substrate scope (aromatic amines, aliphatic amines and ammonium acetate) and opens up an interesting and attractive avenue for the synthesis of α-ketoamide derivatives.

This paper presents titanium dioxide nanostructured surfaces prepared in organic electrolytes containing ammonium fluoride by anodic oxidation method. Two approaches were used for fabrication, one-step and two-step anodization. The obtained TiO2 surfaces have nanoporous structure. The morphology of anodized TiO2 nanostructures was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

For the first time, we considered Mn oxide/C60 composites as water-oxidizing catalysts. The composites were synthesized by easy and simple procedures, and characterized by some methods. The water-oxidizing activities of these composites were also measured in the presence of cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate. We found that the nanolayered Mn oxide/C60 composites show promising activity toward water ox...

A bench-scale up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was applied to start-up the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process from conventional return activated sludge. The reactor was operated for approximately 170 days and was fed synthetic wastewater containing mainly nitrite ) (NO2 − and ammonium ) (NH 4 + as main substrates. After 106 days of operation, the first evidence of Ana...

A laboratory incubation study was conducted on a temperate grassland soil to quantify the main mineral nitrogen (N) transformation rates and pathways via a15N tracing approach. Soil samples were taken from long-term phosphorus (P) trial investigate effects gross N-transformations under high low amendment. The soils incubated over 2-week period treated with ammonium-nitrate (NH4NO3) which applie...

N2O emission in the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process is of growing concern. In this study, effects of substrate concentrations on N2O emissions were investigated in an anammox reactor. Extremely high N2O emissions of 1.67 % were led by high NH4-N concentrations. Results showed that N2O emissions have a positive correlation with NH4-N concentrations in the anammox reactor. Reducing...

Anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria derive their energy for growth from the oxidation of ammonium with nitrite as the electron acceptor. N2, the end product of this metabolism, is produced from the oxidation of the intermediate, hydrazine (N2H4). Previously, we identified N2-producing hydrazine dehydrogenase (KsHDH) from the anammox organism Kuenenia stuttgartiensis as the gene prod...
