We propose a solution to problem solving by analogy which is an alternative to Carbonell's transformational analogy. Given a plan that succeeds for the base, we apply the plan to the target and propose to correct its failures by an abductive recovery mechanism inspired from abductive recovery from failed proofs.

We study the role of health benefits in an employer's compensation strategy, given the overall goal of minimizing total compensation cost (wages plus health-insurance cost). When employees' health status is private information, the employer's basic benefit package consists of a base wage and a moderate health plan, with a generous plan available for an additional charge. We show that in setting...

We explore the inand outof sample robustness of tests for consumer choice inconsistencies based on parameter restrictions in parametric models, with a focus on tests proposed by Ketcham, Kuminoff and Powers (KKP). We start by arguing that their non-parametric alternatives are inherently conservative with respect to detecting mistakes. We then show that our parametric model is robust to KKP’s su...

As the application field of plan recognition expands continuously, the traditional plan recognition methods have hindered the application of plan recognition in hostile environment, which ignored the defects of misleading action. In this paper, a plan recognition algorithm based on the process of misleading action is proposed under the framework of plan knowledge graph. The method makes it poss...

Managers can create and implement their own efficient strategic plans to adapt to changes which have diminished the firm’s competitiveness in the market. A three-step method can be applied in its formulation as an alternative to relying on outsourced planning or business consultants. The method includes the identification of economic, technological, or competitive factors within the firm which ...

In the study of business management, process integration has become an interesting area of research that affects analysts studying and working on existing system plans. Process integration aims to investigate relationships across a business compendium to produce classifications and merge similar activities into a standardized system. Integration is the process of merging elements from two simil...

Process evaluation is used to monitor and document program implementation and can aid in understanding the relationship between specific program elements and program outcomes. The scope and implementation of process evaluation has grown in complexity as its importance and utility have become more widely recognized. Several practical frameworks and models are available to practitioners to guide ...

Formation of a networked manufacturing system for particular multi-part product orders is tackled in the presence of alternative process plans for the parts. Each process plan can be transformed into a production schedule in different ways, depending on the machines that are available for each operation in various nodes of the network. Machine suitability is decided on technical criteria using ...

Prior approaches to generating diverse plans in domainindependent planning seek out variations on plan structure such as actions or causal links used, or states entered. As a result, these approaches can achieve great plan set diversity by synthesizing unnecessarily long plans. This type of misleading diversity may be useful if, for example, the plans are used as training data for a learner; ho...

This article describes the use of cost models to: evaluate alternative frame designs, trade off applicable manufacturing processes and understand impacts of design features and material selections. This capability goes beyond pure cost values and allows a designer to identify the optimal and most affordable configuration and manufacturing plan during the design phase. Cost models can be tools t...
