In this study was to extract and analyses composition of corn oil and develop cosmetics from corn oil extract. A simple high performance liquid chromatographic procedure for the determination of retinol and alpha tocopherol from corn oil nanoemulsions was proposed. The preparation condition for nanoemulsions of corn oil by high pressure homogenization was investigated. It appeared that the appr...

Hyperglycemia and diabetes have been shown to increase diacylglycerol (DAG) level and activate protein kinase C (PKC) activity in the vascular tissues, possibly altering vascular function. We have characterized the effects of D-alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) on PKC activities and DAG levels in rat aortic smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) cultured with elevated glucose levels as well as in the vascular ...

The present paper compares the effects of two monounsaturated oils, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and high-oleic acid sunflower oil (HOSO), on serum and LDL peroxides, eicosanoid production and the thrombogenic ratio (thromboxane (TX) B2:6-keto-prostaglandin F1alpha) in fourteen non-obese post-menopausal women. The subjects, mean age 63 (SD 11) years, were assigned to two consecutive oleic acid...

We have previously reported that substantial amounts of tocotrienols were present in the skin of animals fed a diet containing a tocopherols and tocotrienols rich fraction (T-mix) extracted from palm oil, and further, that sesame lignans enhanced tocotrienol levels in the skin. The present studies were undertaken to determine whether dietary tocotrienols and those with sesamin could protect the...

Human glutathione S-transferase omega 1-1 (hGSTO1-1) is a newly identified member of the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family of genes, which also contains alpha, mu, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta members. hGSTO1-1 catalyzes the reduction of arsenate, monomethylarsenate (MMA(V)), and dimethylarsenate (DMA(V)) and exhibits thioltransferase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities. Recent evidenc...

Carotenoids and tocopherols are powerful antioxidants synthesized in plants from a common precursor. They may offer significant health benefits to humans. Seed oils have been shown to possess high levels of tocopherols, but little is known about their levels in the edible portions of most vegetable crops. A two-year field experiment was conducted at two locations to assess levels of major carot...

An oxidized frying oil (OFO) diet has been reported to induce an increase in lipid peroxidation and a reduction in vitamin E status in animal tissues. This study was performed to investigate how vitamin E metabolism is influenced by OFO. Male Wistar rats were divided into three groups, a control group (CO) and two OFO-fed groups (OF and OFE). The diet of the OFE group was supplemented with an e...

Tocopherol-associated protein (TAP) was expressed in mouse mast cells. TAP was predominantly localized in the cytoplasm, and the subcellular localization was not changed by alpha-tocopherol. The results suggest that the physiological role of TAP in mast cells is not regulation of tocopherol function but an as-yet-unidentified activity.

The content and composition of different vitamin E isoforms was analyzed in normal human skin. Interestingly the epidermis contained 1% alpha-tocotrienol, 3% gamma-tocotrienol, 87% alpha-tocopherol, and 9% gamma-tocopherol. Although the levels of tocotrienol in human epidermis appear to be considerably lower than reported in the hairless mouse, the presence of significant amounts of tocotrienol...
