A 61-year-old man presented with consistent hemolytic anemia 15 months after ascending and total arch replacement for DeBakey I type acute aortic dissection. The cause of hemolysis turned out to be mechanical damage of red blood cells at the inverted felt of the proximal anastomosis. Reoperation of resection of the felt and repair of the proximal anastomosis successfully resolved this problem. ...
We report herein the case of a 55-year-old man who presented an acute hemolysis following a 6th cycle of FOLFOX regimen for a metastatic colorectal cancer; this patient had previously received 12 cycles in an adjuvant setting. He had presented attenuated signs during the previous cycle. This corresponded to an oxaliplatin-induced immune hemolytic anemia. This unfrequent side effect of oxaliplat...
INTRODUCTION Yeasts belonging to the genus Candida are responsible for the majority of fungal infections in humans. Candida tropicalis has been one of most commonly isolated non-albicans species. To analyze in vitro hemolysis promoted by clinical isolates of C. tropicalis obtained from blood and other clinical samples from hospitalized patients at the University Hospital of Londrina State Unive...
Incubation of a 0.5% suspension of washed, normal mouse erythrocytes with ferriprotoporphyrin IX (FP) at 37 degrees C and pH 7.4 caused potassium loss, swelling, increased susceptibility to hypotonic lysis, and finally hemolysis. Hemolysis was not inhibited by incubation in the dark, malonyldialdehyde was not produced, and various free radical scavengers had no effect on the hemolysis. Only the...
Several acute hemolysis episodes, sometimes lethal, have been recently described after transplantation of allogeneic peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells (PBHSCs). Hemolysis resulted from the production of donor-derived antibodies (Abs) directed at ABO antigens (Ags) present on recipient red blood cells (RBCs). A multicenter randomized phase III clinical study comparing allogeneic PBHSC tr...
Intravascular hemolysis is associated with several pathologic conditions that include hemoglobinopathies, trauma, malaria, and bacterial infections. Among plasma-protective proteins against oxidative damage caused by red blood cell rupture, haptoglobin and hemopexin are thought to play a crucial role. Haptoglobin and hemopexin, by binding with highaffinity hemoglobin and heme, respectively, exe...
A 8 month-old infant presented with acute onset of severe jaundice, anemia requiring transfusion and Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency. The infant did not take drugs, he did not consume fava beans, but fava beans DNA was found on pumpkin he consumed the day before jaundice onset. This is the first case of hemolysis triggered by ingestion of food cross-contaminated with fava beans.
See article on page 1053–1063, in this issue Hemolysis is an important adverse event of transfusion, perhaps most notably exemplified by the acute hemolytic transfusion reaction. This classically arises from major ABO incompatibility, where patient with ABO-incompatible RBCs leads to opsonization circulating complement-fixing immunoglobulin (Ig) M and intravascular hemolysis.1 Acute hemolysis c...
Acute Hemolysis After High-Dose Intravenous Immunoglobulin Therapy in Highly HLA Sensitized Patients
Results. In order to study the hemolytic activity of Streptococcus, α -, β - and γ -isolated from samples clinical material synanthropic birds rodents, we studied 324 cultures Streptococcus. rats, mice caught in livestock buildings -types hemolysis were mainly manifested, -hemolysis was observed less frequently. To properties 140 Streptococcus isolated air, washings walls floors, as well feeder...
