Thirty-one strains of Acinetobacter species, including type strains of the 18 genomic species and 13 clinical isolates, were compared by amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA), random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD), and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting. ARDRA, performed with five different enzymes, showed low discriminatory power for differen...

Acinetobacter spp. are responsible for an increasing number of opportunistic, nosocomial infections. They have been isolated from diverse inanimate objects in the hospital environment and are resistant to most of the commonly used antibiotics. Existing media for the isolation of Acinetobacter spp. are either nonselective, allowing the growth of unwanted bacteria, or too inhibitory, inhibiting t...

An outbreak of hospital-acquired Acinetobacter baumannii infections, caused by a bla(OXA-23)-positive carbapenem-resistant strain belonging to international clone II/ST2, was detected in Latvia. The strain was partially equipped with the armA gene and the intI1-aacA4-catB8-aadA1-qacEΔ1 class 1 integron. In addition, the strain carried AbaR25, a novel AbaR4-like resistance island of ~46,500 bp c...

Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging nosocomial pathogen causing infections worldwide. In this study, we determined the genome sequences of two multidrug-resistant A. baumannii clinical strains isolated from a hospital in southern India. Genome analyses indicate that both the strains harbor numerous horizontally transferred genetic elements and antibiotic resistance cassettes.

The rising incidence of Acinetobacter infection in the intensive care unit (ICU) causes a great concern to all clinicians and intensivists worldwide due to their extraordinary ability to develop resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics. Acinetobacter can infect virtually any body site, particularly the lower respiratory tract, the bloodstream, and the urinary tract. Infection is mainly rel...

Acinetobacter species are defined on the basis of several phenotypic characters, results of DNA-DNA homology, and more recently, similarities or dissimilarities in 16S rRNA gene sequences. However, the 16S rRNA gene is not polymorphic enough to clearly distinguish all Acinetobacter species. We used an RNA polymerase beta-subunit gene (rpoB)-based identification scheme for the delineation of spe...

Acinetobacter spp. are gram-negative aerobic coccobacilli that are ubiquitous in nature, persistent in the hospital environment, and cause a variety of opportunistic nosocomial infections (Bergogne-Berezin et al, 1996). They cause various types of human infections. Of the currently known 31 Acinetobacter species, Acinetobacter baumannii is the most prevalent in clinical specimens. A number of s...

Colistin resistance remains rare among clinical isolates of Acinetobacter species. We noted the emergence of colistin-resistant bloodstream isolates of the Acinetobacter genomic species (GS) 13BJ/14TU from patients at a university hospital between 2003 and 2011. We report here, for the first time, the microbiological and molecular characteristics of these isolates, with clinical features of Aci...

BACKGROUND The adeB gene in Acinetobacter baumannii regulates the bacterial internal drug efflux pump that plays a significant role in drug resistance. The aim of our study was to determine the occurrence of adeB gene in multidrug resistant and New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM- 1) gene in imipenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from wound swab samples in a tertiary care hospi...

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen causing health care-associated infections. In this study, we determined the genome of a twitching-positive clinical strain, B8300, isolated from a hospital in southern India. De novo assembly of PacBio long-read sequencing data generated the B8300 genome that consists of a chromosome of 3.82 Mbp and a plasmid of 25.15 kbp.
