Bochdalek hernia (BH) can be a life-threatening condition in infants. Approximately 85.3% of newborns with a BH are immediately at high risk and have a high mortality rate due to respiratory insufficiency [Kocakusak et al.: Hernia 2005;9: 284-287]. However, BH is almost asymptomatic in adults and discovered only incidentally [Wilkins et al.: Clin Imaging 1994;18: 224-229]. Complicated BH in adu...

We present results from a fully relativistic investigation of matter fallback in a supernova, assuming that the central compact star is a black hole (BH). Our goal is to answer the following questions: can we infer from the light curve whether a stellar black hole (BH) has formed in the aftermath of a supernova explosion ? Did SN1897A produce a BH and, if so, when will the hole become detectabl...

These lectures give an elementary introduction to the subject of four dimensional black holes (BHs) in supergravity and the Attractor Mechanism in the extremal case. Some thermodynamical properties are discussed and some relevant formulæ for the critical points of the BH effective potential are given. The case of MaxwellEinstein-axion-dilaton (super)gravity is discussed in detail. Analogies amo...

The robustness of stellar-dynamical black hole (BH) mass measurements is illustrated using six galaxies that have results from independent research groups. Derived BH masses have remained constant to a factor of ∼ 2 as spatial resolution has improved by a factor of 2 – 330, as velocity distributions have been measured in increasing detail, and as the analysis has improved from spherical, isotro...

PURPOSE The B0 and B1+ maps required for calculation of the radiofrequency (RF) pulse of parallel transmission (pTx) are obtained in calibration scans; however, they may be affected by respiratory motion. We aimed to compare the reproducibility of B0 and B1+ maps and gradient echo (GRE) images of the brain scanned with pTx at 7T between free-breathing (FB) and breath-holding (BH) conditions dur...

Treatment with tetrahydrobiopterin (BH(4)) reduces blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that chronic BH(4) reduces blood pressure in male SHR by reducing testosterone biosynthesis mediated by increasing nitric oxide (NO). Male SHR, aged 17-18 wk, intact or castrated, were treated for 1 wk with BH(4) (20 mg.kg(-1).day(-1) ip). Af...

The first example of a mixed-metal amidoborane Na(2)Mg(NH(2)BH(3))(4) has been successfully synthesized. It forms an ordered arrangement in cation coordinations, i.e., Mg(2+) bonds solely to N(-) and Na(+) coordinates only with BH(3). Compared to ammonia borane and monometallic amidoboranes, Na(2)Mg(NH(2)BH(3))(4) can release 8.4 wt% pure hydrogen with significantly less toxic gases.

• The present boom of interest to the black holes is very much substantiated by accumulation of astrophysical observations, which can be interpreted in terms of black holes [1]. This, certainly, refers to very large-mass systems that are to be described in the framework of classical (non-quantum) field theory (General Relativity or other classical theories of gravitation). Quantum properties of...

AIMS Heart failure is a common antecedent to atrial fibrillation; both heart failure and atrial fibrillation are associated with increased myocardial oxidative stress. Chronic canine heart failure reduces atrial action potential duration and atrial refractoriness. We hypothesized that inducible nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) contributes to atrial oxidative stress and electrophysiologic alterati...
