Wc present an approximate string matching case study. An optimized version of the edit distance algorithm is described which has proven more accurate for a particular commercial application than the existing (benchmark) algorithm. The cvoluhon and nature of the optimization are detailed and test results are presented.

During deep inspirations (DI), a distending force is applied to airway smooth muscle (ASM; i.e., stress) and the muscle is lengthened (i.e., strain), which produces a transient reversal of bronchoconstriction (i.e., bronchodilation). The aim of the present study was to determine whether an increase in ASM stress or the accompanying increase in strain mediates the bronchodilatory response to DI....

47 Viral infections, such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and rhinovirus, adversely affect 48 neonatal and pediatric populations resulting in significant lung morbidity, including acute asthma 49 exacerbation. Studies in adults have demonstrated that human airway smooth muscle (ASM) 50 cells modulate inflammation through their ability to secrete inflammatory cytokines and 51 chemokines. Th...

BACKGROUND Perioperative bronchospasm refractory to β agonists continues to challenge anesthesiologists and intensivists. The TMEM16A calcium-activated chloride channel modulates airway smooth muscle (ASM) contraction. The authors hypothesized that TMEM16A antagonists would relax ASM contraction by modulating membrane potential and calcium flux. METHODS Human ASM, guinea pig tracheal rings, o...

Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K ) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma, but its mechanism has been considered indirect, through release of inflammatory cell mediators. Because airway smooth muscle (ASM) contractile hyper-responsiveness plays a critical role in asthma, the aim of the present study was to determine whether PI3K can directly regulate contractility of ASM. Immunohistoc...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine cut-off point of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) adjusted body mass index (BMI) for sarcopenia in the Korean women and evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in postmenopausal women. METHODS This study was based on the data obtained from 2008 to 2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) IV and V. A whole...

Since REISSEISEN [1] first described the airway smooth muscle (ASM) of the bronchial tree extending from the central airways to the level of the membranous bronchiole in 1822, ignorance of the physiological function of this prominent component of the airways in health and disease has continued. The above question will surely be answered one day, when a model of conducting airways devoid of ASM ...

One of the unmet needs for asthma management is a new therapeutic agent with both anti-inflammatory and anti-smooth muscle (ASM) remodeling effects. The mannose receptor (MR) family plays an important role in allergen uptake and processing of major allergens Der p 1 and Fel d 1. We have previously reported that ASM cells express a mannose receptor (ASM-MR) and that mannan derived from Saccharom...

Active Shape Model (ASM) has been shown to be a powerful tool for image interpretation, especially in feature points localization for face image. The original ASM model parameter estimation is based on the assumption that the profiles follow a Gaussian distribution. Its performance is always vulnerable to distortion due to pose, illumination and expression variations. In this paper, the improve...
